"Clicking noise when starting"/"dash lights ok" = low battery or dirty/old solenoid
no
noise/no lights on dash = dead battery

smoke = expensive wiring problem

Could also be the Ignition switch, but if it was reliable yesterday, then it probably isn't that. Ignition switches normally die slowly.

The starter motor circuit has only the main 12v fuse protecting it. The high current 12V is always connected, and the solenoid part is a direct connection to the starter solenoid from the ignition switch.

Shouldn't be too expensive, but ignition switches can cost > $100.
