Hi bit of a noob question but does welding the centre of the diff weaken or strengthen it?
or will it just weaken something else

was thinking in the back of a lightweight ute behind a 1400 it would be ok??

Probably puts a bit more stress on the axles, but you don't have to worry about the spider gears sh!tting themselves which is usually what goes first. Just make sure you weld it properly

its the axles that cop the stress instead. Weather you would break one during normal use is another question.the only time I hear of stories about when welded diff centres break axles is when people are thrashing them.

Does the size of the rear tyres come into it?
Like say 185/14 would put less stress through it compared
to say 215/15??????

How wide the tyre is will affect the stress placed on the axle, a skinnier tyre will break traction sooner than a wider one taking the stress of the driveline.

mate you could flog it all day and the diff wont give way if welded properly, i havnt broke one yet and i have given mine an absolute belting. If an axle is going to break it will shear straight off near the shrink ring. Sidedraught is certainly on the money but as your using the 185 it will put consideratly less stress on the axle. You should be fine pal have fun!

just a question about welded diffs. when people say a h145 wont last long behind an a14 or a15, how will a welded h145 hold up. What part in the h145 actually fails when powered by the bigger motor?

Anyone with a welder and knows where needs to be welded, basically you need to weld the spider gears together its as simple as that, do not be afraid to "over weld" it, the more the better
