What does your glovebox owner's manual say? It might say 7 or 8 degrees before TDC.

it says 7 deg!
so does this mean you have the crank on pistom one compression then u put on 7degrees then install the distributor with rotor pointing at number one point? i installed mine a 0deg and was timing it by just advancing or retarding the distributor!

You're doing it the right way. You put the dizzy in at TDC cylinder one and then advance/retard via rotating the dizzy.
I'm pretty sure going one tooth either way will put it way over 7 degrees advance or retard.

It says that because due to the 'twist' in the dizzy gear, it will rotate back around to TDC as it drops into place.
That makes sense now.

hi thanks i just put the crank to 7 deg and put in the dizzy and know the car idles very good before it had very low vacuum readings 14 hg and the revs would go up and down
know it sits at 800rpm steady and has 18-19hg vacuum readings! must of been off a bit before i think! Thanks!

Glad to hear it is working now. You put the crank just before TDC, then install the distributor.
Altnernatively you can put the distributor in at TDC, then move the crank to 5 or 7 BTDC and rotate the distributor so the points are just opening. If you have enough room to rotate it. Either way will work.

actually the real procedure would be putting the crank at 5 BTDC, and checking the cam position by feeling the rocker at first and second. if the rocker arm rocks (tight), turn another round. if the rocker arm feels loose, then put the distributor. you dont want the distributor to be 180 degrees off. alternatively, if you just put the distributor at TDC, and start the engine, if the engine backfire, just swap the plug lead 1 and 3. your lead position looks 180 degree off compared to standard now, but it still works.
