Hey all, My gearbox whines on decelleration only?
Tech wiki says worn input shaft bearing Is the input shaft bearing the splined shaft that is visible when the engine is out? If so, how do i replace the bearing? Thanks, Zak

Whining on Deceleration won't be a bearing. Most likely noisy gears. Are you sure it's the gearbos and not the diff?

It's possibly not the bearing itself that is whining, but you can reach a point where the bearing is so far worn down it lets the input shaft (and/or the layshaft) or even the output shaft, gain a little angularity or just plain sideways movement. Those gears were machined and designed to contact each other optimally and have been doing so, but if the bearing wear is severe, they no longer have the same 'meshing' pattern as befe and can get noisy big time.
It isn't the only possibility of course. but if that is what is causing it, two things - first if left too long, the bearing(s) can collapse, and lead to massive gearbox damage, ior if left too long and it doesn't fail outright, then you repalace the bearings etc, well the teeth have been contacting each other 'wrongly' for a long time and have worn a slightly different shape than the original, and when you fit new bearings they dnn't mate up as ideally and will keep whining (though not as badly). So in a nutshell - get to the bottom of it ASAP because it can be on the verge of major damae, and the longer it is left the less perfect the result will be when it finally is rebuilt, You can view topic.
