Rather than work on a project that is closer to completion, I spent the weekend building the ugliest manifold I have ever seen. If I'd had some gas for the MIG welder it might have looked better. It may clean up to an acceptable level too. But I digress.
It is the prototype for the turbo project. What I did was make a log with runners to attach to a dual Weber DCOE manifold. I have posted pictures of it in the photo section, three in all.
Truth be told, it isn't finished as I have yet to do the calculations and buy the injectors. Once I have them, I'll install their bosses and call it done.
Have a good laught at my horrid welds but remember, it's the prototype.

Tim, how are you going to install the bosses? I heard that standard screw-in (NPT?) fittings come in the exact size for Ford/GM injectors ...

Congratulations on making this ... I'm sure to many club members it is a thing of beauty!

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do about the injector bosses. I'm still working out whether I'm going to use the Bosch style (like the Ford or GM units) or the style that Nissan uses. John (tensandtwenties) has a set of injectors from a Z-20 engine out of a 200SX that we are thinking about.
The beauty of the Bosch style is the almost infinite range of sizes. The disadvantage is the "fuel rail" mounting system. The Nissan (which are probably Hitachi or something) would be easier to mount and plumb but I'm not sure of sizes.
Incidentally, would someone like to offer some advice as to what size I should use? The engine will be about 1270cc with around 10-15 pounds of boost. My calculations came out to around 24lbs/hr (255cc/min) injectors. Does that sound right?

You could look at it by horsepower. The 19lbs/hr are good for about 300 hp (?) on a V8 depending on pressure, so should be good for 150hp on a four cylinder.

I dig this intake manifold. Add this homemade intake to the homemade turbo and thats enough to keep me going for a while.
What computer do you plan to use to run this? That to me is the biggest drawback(most expensive).

Okay then, 19 to 24 pounders it is. Whichever I can find first. My calculations came up with the 19lb/hr figure so I bumped up one size for a safety margin.
As for the ECU, I'm leaning toward the Simple Digital Systems EM-3 unit. I like the idea of not having to rely on my laptop to program it. It comes with a hand held tuning module thingy, you see.
The $1000 price is reasonable, when you consider the $2500 in machine work on the rest of the engine, but still hurts a bit when I remember I paid $5 for the car originally.
Damn, I have got to stop thinking about these stupid things I do!

Have you checked out the MegaSquirt EFI system? It's only a couple hundred dollars, but ya gotta build it yourself.

That Megasquirt does look pretty cool. I just wonder how much of it do you have to assemble. I can see a big box of diodes, chips, transistors, capacitors and continuum transfunctioners arriving at my door. Instructions would read "refer to your doctoral thesis on electronic engineering..." or something. Also, I'm not clear as to what is needed to program the thing. Laptop, Palm Pilot, tricorder, or Uri Geller's psychic abilities (of course, he'd just bend your keys).
All in all though, I'm going to contact them and see if these questions can be answered to my stisfaction and I'll probably put my name on the next order list. At that price, even if I don't use it, I'm not out that much money.

Good summation of the MegaSquirt -- a lot of unanswered questions. On the other hand it looks good for the adventurous as any injectors and sensors can be used. It is programmed with a PC program.

One thing you turbo guys should know is that it doesn't control spark timing, it is a fuel-only controller.
