#1 Locked or LSD?
Daveman Posted on: 2003/8/8 4:21
I've got a B-W shortened Pintara diff for my 1200 sedan but it's just a single spinner. I was told that you can get LSD centres for them? but as i'm on a tight budget the option of locking it seems to be the quick fix. Can anyone shed some light on the issue, as to whether it's worth the extra money to have the LSD or whether in my situation I should perhaps just lock it?

Depends if its for street or race.
For street dont go a locker...its too dangerous especially in the wet.
For race a locker will do fine as the speeds you do unloads the inside enough to compensate for the spin a diff gives you. But if you can afford it go for LSD, it will give you better lap times.
If its for rally on dirt a locker is fine

Yeah, locking a diff will destroy it. Having an open diff is fine for everything except drag racing and "2 wheel burnouts" A locked diff is only good for "2 wheel burnouts"

Locked diffs can be made to work in racecars, but generally only those with tons of grunt and relatively narrow tyres, think of the GPA sierra's as an example.
They make moving the car around in the garage or pits a real pain, and forget about getting thru hairpins without the front pushing.
They should be illegal on the street...

Dig around the wreckers in any model Falcon ute. They got the BW type 75 diff and many are LSDs as well as the Valiants and some Commodores. The ratios are way too tall for your Datto but the LSDs are cheap. I could be wrong but I understand the Aussie market Skyline HR 31s and Pintaras got the same Borg Warner type 75 diffs.
