#1 carby headache
1000Coupe Posted on: 2007/6/29 7:34
im having a few carby dramas, think it might be the float level...
car is not running well idling or at revs under 2000 accelerating,
also very hard to get it to start up properly when cold. it struggles to run and build revs up to about 1500rpm, after that u can get some revs and keep it running and warm it up. otherwise its a bit like trying to get a fire started in the wind....

where on the glass window on the stock carb should the level be? I cant see a mark, but its about 2/3 of the way up the window.

would this need a complete carby kit ti fix it, or just some adjustment any tips appreciated.
cheers, John

1/2 way ir right. 2/3 is too rich.

Don't bother with a rebuild kit. Make sure of the basics first, or you'll never get it running right. It's probably a vacuum leak causing most of the problems if it just started doing it, but there are many other causes. Check out all the carb links like DattoDav posted, be thorough and careful.

I did the "quick rebuild method", along with adjusted the float level, and gave it new plugs and dizzy cap also filed points. it runs a lot better now, but still having problem with idling and getting started when cold.

i warmed it up and set the idle nicely but it never seems to stay there over a bit of driving, always needing the choke etc.
also it has a problem just between 500 and 1000 rpm, like a little miss and almost stall when warm. when cold at these revs it is hard to get it going, like trying to get a fire lit in the wind....???

im wondering about the 2 grub screw things on the side of the top of the carb (stocko), i took these out when i took the top off, are they meant to have a set number of turns when putting in to align the passages through them??? im thinking this might be my problem related

Sounds like vacuum leak.

Nah, if you mean the jets on top of the carb, visible when the carb is assembled -- those are the slow jets. They are meant to be screwed in tight. Don't use a lot of force, but screw them in all the way. Ditto for all the jets & bleeds.

ok yes, slow jets. not the problem then.

dont think its vacuum leak, or it would be just as bad cold or warm. this problem is mainly when cold its very hard to get revs up, wheras when warm it hesitates a bit but starts up easy enough. after 1000rpm its totally fine.

im thinking maybe the condensor, there was some confusion about it last time i had a new coil and points put in by a mechanic, no condensor came or right one didnt come or something... because its an A14 in a KB10 some mismatch maybe. anyway that part has never been replaced so i might try replace it and see what happens.

Exactly what mine was doing earlier this year. Combination of a vacuum leak, lean a/f mixture (from main screw) and low idle speed.

It ran quite well when warmed up. After fixing it, it runs even better when warmed up and good when cold.
