by dattodude on 2008/3/16 10:33:21 No argument from me, but to be truly 'Excellent' it needs 40mm more wheelbase plus all the suspension & steering upgrades that the factory did. Perhaps fitting the L series makes it half 'Excellent' I vaguely remember something about some Excellents being fitted with the A14 instead of the L14 for some reason or other. Fuzzy memory? Probably.

L series would be great for outright power and striaght lines in most cases but from our Datsun runs, i always see the Boof mobile way way ahead of the L series magic of the Pigdog mobile (when it was on 4 cyl
)I have and still am considering an L16 conversion just due to availability of lseries parts over a15 parts but my a15 has heaps of live and fun left in it for my tight a$$ budget at the moment. All depends on what other mods you plan on for the car to handle the power plant, brakes, suspension diff etc.

Jumping back a couple of posts... Dodgeman, how similer are the J series and Austin A series? Can parts be interchanged? Im guessing no because otherwise there would be a mass of big block 1.6 minis kicking around! I might sugest it to my Boss. Hes forever having problems with his Minis and making me fix em! He just looked at me funny when i suggested a A14 from a N10 Pulsar

when i had a mini. people were just starting to make front subframes and install suzuki gti 1.3 engines, since honda 1.6 6vtecs have also been popular.... like all conversions depends on your budget but i can just imagine bmw powered 1.6 supercharged old school minis running around.

The BMC 'B' series was used in things like Morris Majors & Austin Lancers, Austin 1800's & MGB's, but definately not mini's

I think its time to get my L16 120Y project underway! it's going in for rust repairs tomorrow :) we'll sort out the L vs A series debate on the track - in the same class. I'll be using the smallest capacity L block avail in Aus (L16 1595cc) to stay in the under 1600 class and using the heavier 120Y coupe body. If these lighter, oversize A series that apparently have better power/weight and handling can't beat that around a track, they'll have no excuses eh? hehe. the 120Y goes to a mate's workshop for rust repairs tomorrow.

slow down there mr mik, the GOR run was when i had a less than stock power'd L series...didnt have the twins on it and had the super restrictive 2 inch exhaust that used to be on adrians car but my car was only lacking the power to keep up with the A series....can say that adrians car was going round the corners quicker than i was, he would just get away from the corner quicker also remember that boofs car has had a few more $$$ thrown at the suspention and stuff...and he also had tyres with tread on them and anyway mik, from the video i have of that run you werent anywhere to be seen(even if you were the car behind me) so dont know how you would have seen adrian getting away from me if he did

[ There is no similarity between the Austin/E1/J series engines & the Nissan A series design, other than the basic OHV, upright, inline, 4 cyl configuration. very informative, i like most people have been led to believe the datsun A was adirect copy of the morris A

I don't know of any "credible" source that would lead you to believe that. If your source isn't credible, then it's usually a good idea to actually check before accepting these things as facts.
It takes only one good look at each of the two engines to realise that there is no similarity of design at all. The BMC engines, for some wholey inexplicable reason, run the ports back between the pushrods while every other production inline OHV engine design that I can bring to mind runs the ports out to the other side of the head without needing to compromise the shape, position or number of ports as a result of pushrod positioning. The British engine, [& the Datsun copies] use two inlet ports only in their obsolete iron heads. It's this reversal of port layout that places the exhaust manifold over the fuel pump & provided road service organisations throughout Australia with a large workload during summer when vapour lock problems plagued Austin cars & trucks when heat from the manifold turned the fuel pump into a fuel cooker. [Morris cars used an electric pump]

i so knew you would bite nick
i had a great vantage point from my 300m back. As i could keep up of the straights but my suspension is rubbish compared to the both of yours (something im hoping we can fix together) that i had no way in hell of keeping up.Missing twins and taking boofs hand me downs like me , i still see merits in the a over L but like i said... I have seriously contemplated L series, remeber, we have talked about it.You can view topic.
