I curently run 185/60r14 toyo r888 and will be needing a new set begining of next year. I think that I would like to try out some smaller tyres and wheels ie 185/60r13 to try and get through my gears quicker.

what a peoples opinion on runing smaller wheels.

I can do the whole of barbagellos in 3rd apart from coming down the hill when I get into 4th, and the front straight I can hold it to around 7400rpm or about 140kph in 3rd or I can hit 4th for a split second get a touch more speed then brake for turn 1.

if I have smaller wheels then maybe I can get into 4th earler and wind it out a bit more.

They may also help on hill climb as I seem to get stuck in second a lot and end up having to rev it right out.

would smaller wheels also help my brakes.

any ideas would be apreaciated.

my thinking was smaller tyres would help yiu get through the gears better but will not help your breaking, if anything will make them heat up quicker due to more rotations per distance covered.

also if you drop gearing too much, more than 3% below stock recomended tyre diameter, manufacturers give you warnings such as your discs might crack etc.

Makes sense if they heat up more under breaking

185/60R13 is about the same as standard. Its what i run on the front of the 1000.

Ill have to come up and watch you compete sometime Jeff. Been too busy lately.

Jeff,it really depends at what rev range your engine makes it's optimum power, this is the sweet spot where it needs to run in any gear.I would assume 7400 is redline so around 7000 would be the "brick wall"we all dread.
If this is the case i'd try some 205 60 x13 toyos(so you don't loose the footprint of the 14")and also look for a shorter diff ratio.

As for the brakes, unless your doing 40 lap races on the limit they'll be fine.

Happy punting
