#1 Installing aftermarket relays for headlights
LeDevil Posted on: 2009/5/14 7:37
Has anyone done this to there 1200? I've tried the Tech Wiki but came up empty handed. On the other Datsun forum I look at for assistance they have done it to there trucks and 510's. They say it makes the lights brighter and draws current away from the switch and cures the over heating issue. But unfortunately none of them have done it to a 1200 so they can't tell me what wires to modify anyone have any info on doing this to a 1200?

I increased all the wire sizes to my headlights in my 1k and added new relays, 1 for high beam and 1 for low, and there is a noticable difference to the headlight brightness.

pics of mine wont help as i rewired my whole car, and dont have much of thefactory stuff, but its pretty simple.

All you need to to is use the current headlight wires to trigger the relays.
Then supply power straight from the battery to the relays.
Then make sure you connect a good earth to the lights.
Then run power from the relays to the lights.

Use heavy wire for the one from the Battery to the relays, and from the relay to the light.

light wire is fine for the relays earth, but the headlights earth needs to be decent.

as I mounted my relays on the right hand side i used 50amp wire to run to the left hand side to minimise current drop. (actually i used 50amp wire for all as i had a fair bit laying around) but 30amp wire would do for the headlight earths and the side you put the relays, and 50amp from the batt to the relays.

Hope this helps

What do you mean by relays Earth?

sorry forgot, make sure that you run fuses (inline) on the power wires from the relays to the lights.

the relays need to be earthed, as they are just a switch, but that earth doesnt carry the load.

Do you mean ground them when you say earth? Also for the switch I use my current stock switch I just use the high/low beam out puts right? If so do I leave the stock fuse in the block?

EDIT:
Sorry for all the questions but I just don't wanna screw anything up the whole object is to restore the Datto not burn it to the ground lol

found this, it may help http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/headlight-simple.htm

1200wag the version you are looking at is better though as i think it isolates Left and Right as well as low and high. i was going to do this but i figured if i lost low at night i can put high on till i fix the issue.
