thanks Autokat, thats just what I needed to know
 does the plate on the shifter side of the gearbox seal anything in, or is it just a cover...Im thinking i might just drill the head off the bolt and not replace it

If you mean where the clutch cable goes into the bracket/lever ontop of the engine (right hand side when sitting on it)which I think you mean the answer is yes this cover is the clutch case and if you don't have all of the bolts in the sucker will leak I tried putting gasket goo on and nothing worked because the engine get's to hot .But another thought ......... If you can knock the top of the bolt off and take the cover off you should be able to get vice grips onto the part of the bolt that is sticking out and get the rest of it out that way .( if I'm picturing it properly in my head from memory it should work. Because I bet your problem is that the case only gives you a minimum amount of room around the bolt ??? I think. Wait till you see the bolts sitting above the oil filter on an old Suzuki ( that'll make you cry ). thats a good point about removing the cover to expose more of the bolt...if the punch doesn't work then thats what I'll try.

many times when steel bolts get stuck into alloy form corrosion or what ever you end up pulling most of the thread out with it. which means tapping a slightly bigger thread

I would try to drill the bolt with a small bit first then go larger and larger. The heat from the drill is sometimes enough to help get it out. Also some E-Z outs are better than others.

I got it out.
ended up drilling enough out of the head of the bolt that I could use a screwdriver and hammer a notch in the rim of the bolt, then it was just a matter of putting the screwdriver at the right angle, and hammering it around in a circle. It wasn't corroded, just in really tight. I got the cover off and found that the chain had at some stage slipped off the front sprocket and chewed a hole in the alluminium gearbox housing, its less that 5mm long and 2mm wide, but it lets all the oil out. Thinking of filling it with solder...any ideas?
