It's really up to you, and pretty much most combos will get you what you want. Personally I wouldn't fart around with LPG unless you are really keen on a troublesome underperforming motor that gets good milage
Your a harsh man Im planning on sticking with gas research for a while as ive invested quite abit of time and money into so far. Il be upgrading the turbo sometime next year to a gt2860rs then sending it for a tune to the gasman Jason Ghiller. If he can crack the power Im after 180-200kw atw then il be a happy hippy gas addict otherwise il look into injection ![]()

D, you of all people should know the z heads reputation? It's built for emissions and anti pollution- I've heard an l series head actually flows better! George fury raced it because that's the homologated engine, there was no l series turbo bluebird. My point isn't that they're #OOPS#, he's a datsun/Nissan legend but he didn't necessarily choose the z18.
Stu you set your goals too small - 180 with a disco and I'd be on the credit card straight away looking for an ecu. But in reality dyno schmyno it's how it goes that counts! Ruredi, what is in your coupe now? What box?

Lags, he has a 60a 5 speed, but I'd be interested to know the budget for the turbo. Because if it's only a few grand... The A series might be the go. But I think ruredi will get bored fairly quick with the A series.

LAGWAGON as revhead has said...mildly worked A15 with A60 5 Speed.
Yeah I would hate to do all that work and get over it real quick. While It may be the cheapest option, I don't think it will make me the happiest. I don't wanna do CA simply because its too common and the car kinda loses its character. Personally I have always been a fan of petrol. Im only throwing the idea out there because I was told it can be done. I'm not totally opposed to it yet either. Let's say I went with the LZET setup as mentioned with the factory EFI. What are all your opinions then? Let's take LPG out of the equation for a minute because it's making everyone lose focus on the core topic I was originally seeking advice for.

I'd say still ditch the z head and get low comp L head. then mega squirt it for turbo. If marks 180b boogied with all that surely yours would too and his was impressive.
It's been done and results are there. You seem he'll bent on z18 head. Just go with what you wAnt.

i think before you get carried away on idea's for engine swaps, work out your max budget. Will you be doing most of the work yourself?? if not a15 efi turbo maybe $4-5k to get manifold made, all bolted together, tuned, bigger brakes (you will need them!!) diff upgrade etc. LZ hybrid thing maybe $6-10k by the time an engine workshop puts it all together (with brakes/diff etc). CA18 might be a bit cheaper as less mucking about trying to get 2 types of engines to work together than the L and Z. If you can do most of the work yourself, you might get it done for $2-3k maybe.
Any like others have said, you cant have top end speed/handling/fuel economy/reliability/and cheap to build in the same car (as a general rule anyway) figure out your skills and budget, then go from there also, a datsun 1200 with 100 to 120/130 horsepower feels a lot faster than some cars with 200hp etc!! Disclaimer: this is all from my own experiences and opinions and may not mean anything to anybody!!

Leigh the emission gear the SR20DET is superior? :P
Twin spark plugs have a great option you can run them in different configurations to suit different ignition requirements and fuels not just emissions. eg Alfa, Mopar. George Fury had a choice of engines as far I recollect Feral teachings and the turbo L28et and FJ20DET where supposedly considered in the 280zx and 200sx which have superior chassis but in the end the import IRS (it was not what you call factory IRS if you looked under that thing!) bluey with Z18et at 32psi was the cream for handling over 50kg heavier FJT. Someone w/ better info on historical choices there might know? but it might be snowball info. Wheres Feral when you need him! Feral is a pro Zet dude. The L and the Z are the same engines really just different timing cover and crossflow head nothing complicated. Full counterweights on L18 and L20B cranks are superior but not essential for the rpm boost without lag needs. The L with all the gear crammed on one side is not pretty. The Z has sodium filled exhaust valves and exhaust ports that with porting can dwarf most 4 cylinder 8v heads. Plenty of meat there for boost, big ports & valves = winwin. Simon is making big power with the A12 but theres alot of mula behind it and development that can be described as blood sweat and tears but I myself respect love the A again after his efforts. Did someone whisper A18T series? bring it on. My Uncles TRX bluey with LZ20et had notched 86mm bores +4mm bigger inlet valves instead of 42mm stock, +2mm exhaust over 38mm stock. Its suposedly inferior performance oriented pro swirl design chomped his brother (my old man) in most duals vs same psi and same T3 in well tuned FJ20et. Dad even put the running gear in a lighter 1600 shell but still lagged on take off and midrange where it mattered most. When they swapped cars results where pretty much the same. Stu, maybe you should start a thread like Simon on how much your LPG will make with the Disco spud and the winner getting a ride on the track but I reckon your selling yourself short and 200hp atw is a conservative figure.

Another possible setup thats been taking sleep from me lately is a bit of a surprise to some but recent build by Lou Mondello netted 117kws atw in NA. The venerable H20 or in many Fairlady Zs case the R16 w/ H20 crank (exactly same engines) but w/ alloy SSS r16 head.
Pushrods yes! with 500usd roller rockers that fit nicely on an all alloy R16 ported head. It wouldnt be a bad engine to consider as it weighs almost the same as an L20b block but can be bored much further. Its old skool and with boost would kick some serious butt. Only issue is the same as the L series in/ex on same side

Yeah I could start a thread I guess. And I did mean 180-200kw at the wheels not horsepower
