newbie question - threads in carb stripped

Hey guys I am having a problem with my carb/air cleaner housing. The threads that hold the air cleaner housing on top of the carb are stripped inside the carb. I've tried repairing it with thread tape, lock nut, etc.... but it keeps popping off when I drive it. I am guessing that the only way to fix it is to re-thread the inside of the carb somehow with a bigger bolt size ? Should I ditch the stock air cleaner housing altogether?
I bought a pod filter hoping to someday fit it on the carb somehow, but I have no idea what I am doing...is this an easy mod to a stock carb?

Somebody would surely have a stock carby that they would give you (probably free).

Hi mate
Your best bet would be to fit a new carb, which will get you an increase in performance at the same time. You can get adapter plates I believe, they are fairly cheap & should allow you to bolt on a 32/36 weber with no problems.

Have you tried Helicoiling the carby top. I've had to do this to a couple of carby's over the years. You just need a 6 mm thread. Some parts places sell kits with a few inserts, the tap to cut the thread & the tool to insert the new thread. All you have to do is drill the top out with a slightly larger drill ( the kit comes with the size in the instructions), cut the new thread & screw in the insert. Just don't drill all the way through the top.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Hey Ivan, I tried lock tite already and it failed twice, but thanks for the idea. I'll have a look around for the Helicoiling kit you guys are talking about to re-thread the carby top.

Any idea how much I'd need to fork out to buy one of these and have it installed by a mechanic (since I know nothing)? Is it a straight bolt on to an A15 engine? Till then I hope this will suffice:

Hi datsunbeginner
Hey That picture is realy funny , you try to install a hook from rocker cover to hold it at the moment , i doubt that will still hold your air cleaner ![]() thanks regards sumith

Haha thanks. Probably not a good idea to drive it like this eh?
So it seems to me from a quick web search that a new A15 32/36 weber conversion kit is around 600 bucks. I thought of maybe ditching the dodgy air cleaner and doing this instead to my stupid carb: Is it worth it?

Is that a carb setup from Gemparts? (the one you're looking to buy?)
You can cut your costs by getting it all on your own. Weber Carb $150, Second hand Weber adapter plate $25.00, air filter $50.00 ?? But then I guess you'll have to muck around with jetting etc (but you'd have to tune the off-the-shelf setup anyway) Love the drawing BTW.

checked scrapyard at your hood? maybe you can pull a part. here in malaysia, a datsun is a must in a scrapyard. some mazda's carb is plug and play with datsun, they are also hitachi's... check out the carb mounting hole.
