This is some of the main shafts I have, I'm trying to make up a good w56 120y box, is there a way of cleaning up the main shaft where the pilot bearing runs, the good one is out of a w60 sunny box , & is a different length, the other 2 are a bit stuffed can the better of the 2 be polished or can a speedy sleave or something else be done.
Thanks Trev

Next time use that often abused word "Bump". Now about those thingies, try it out with the worst one but not too much. Is that scouring look on them actually raised?

A speedy sleeve sounds do-able. Check with your local machine shop, they should be able to fix it.

If its the centre shaft in the pic that you are refering too then a quick polish in a lathe should be enough to do the job in a standard box. Measure the dia on a good part of the shaft first then polish then remeasure to make sure you dont remove too much material. Simple

If you go for a speedy sleeve, you're looking at bearings to match different sized sleeved shaft + they aren't always the strongest option.

I's suggest machining back, spray welding & grinding.
More pricey, but more longevity / strength.

I took the shaft on the right to a mates place & polished it on a buff wheel, it took .01 of a mm off, so i'll give that ago.

Just keep an eye (or ear) on it.

If the case hardening's damaged, it'll just be a matter of time before it starts to disintegrate.

You'll know cause it'll be noisy as hell.

Thanks, it's just a 4 speed so no big deal if it stuffs up, i'm practicing for when I do the 5 speed.
A mate said he got the gearbox factory to machine the shaft down & use an under size bearing, but wouldn't they have to reharden it.

Yes, as case hardening is typically only about .25mm thick.

There are places that can do this with either cynanide salts or nitriding, but by far the easiest is the spray welding method I mentioned earlier.
