A nice golden oak color on plywood (apec /no knot in the veener) with about 5 or 6 coats of spar varnish would do the trick or the local paint shop for clear laquer I used to do this all the time. I'm doing a 54 wagon simular to this myself.

its nice as... but i reckon the wheel well sections are too cumbersome.. something similar but keeping them to minimum would be really nice

Yeah it looks good but mabey you would want to cover all the sides in the tray

looks like the perfect fit in the middle for a coffin... if the side parts were curved it might be better, not flat straight edges all the way to the rear.
