#1 A14 engine
maztec Posted on: 2006/3/13 10:36
Hey all... called a guy today about an a14.... its been bored out to 1550 cc (cant memba exactly it was around that figure), big cams he sed it was around 36/38 or something.. built 1 year ago by Al's engines. Just need some feed back on what you people think of it in the 1000? will all the A12 stuff on my car bolt onto the engine? (doesnt come with dizzy radiator etc).

cheers

An A14 engine, with a 77mm stroke will need an 80mm bore to reach 1548cc.
Thats 4mm over standard & frankly, I don't think it can really be done with any guarantee of reliability as the gap between the end pairs of cylinders becomes VERY small & is hard to seal with the head gasket.

If, however, this is really an A15, or perhaps an A14 that has been fitted with an 82mm stroke crank from an A15, then the bore would need to be only 77.5mm to yeild 1547cc. This just happens to be the third [& largest] standard oversize for these 76mm bore sized engines & is a size that is easy to get pistons for & will have no real problems with gasket sealing between the end pairs of cylinders.

If it truly is an A14 engine [with 77mm stroke] & it really does displace about 1550cc, I would be a bit wary of it.
Any A14 or A15 will perk up the KB10 quite a bit, even in near stock trim as you are looking at a nominal 40 to 50% boost in capacity alone & most of it is in the stroke which will yeild a big boost on torque over the A10's short 59mm stroke.
You'll love it.

Ive actually got the A12 in my coupe remember :P

Will the A12 dizzy, radiator etc be alright to use on this motor? (as it doesnt come with any jus tthe head and block)

cheers

A12 dizzy will be right if its a late block with the dizzy in the middle otherwise its just a simple baseplate change. The radiator will be sufficient but not the best. I ran a standard radiator behine my worked 1400 and it did tend to get quite hot on the highway. Upgraded to a gemini and no more problems. Had a sunny one as well which worked well. Easier fit than the gemini. Alternator wiring will be fine again if its a late block. Will need slight rewiring if its an early block. And the last thing i can think of the a14 needs engine mount spacers to mover it back around 25mm i think(just search it). Plate steel with two holes drilled. Simple.

The engine is actually coming out of a 1000 too so thats a plus... im pretty sure my A12 is a late model anyways... also.. ive herd people putting the A12 flywheel onto A14's? or something? why do people do that? make your car rev faster? Thanks for the advice Freak

Do you have a front dizzy 1200 engine in the car, or the later [74 & on] A12 engine with the rearward mounted distributor?

Depending on your driving style, I would say that the 1000 radiator should handle a larger engine without difficulty. I do recomend however, that you have the radiator properly serviced, & if the core is at all suspect, then have it fitted with a new heavy duty core.
The 1000 radiator is bigger than the 1200 one & a heavy duty core will have more tubes & fins for a more efficient heat output. This is what I did with my radiator.

If your engine is a later type A12, then the distributor should fit right in, but you will need the steel mounting plate from a later engine if the dizzy is coming from the earlier 1200 engine.

The 1200/A12 flywheel is lighter than the ones on bigger engines & allow the engine to spin up faster, but not necessarily to rev higher.

In regards to performance ,I used to have a stock A15 , with twin Hitachis in my old VB10 and it flew.

The lighter flywheel will make the engine rev more freely but will not be as smooth. Here is a picture of an a14 in my KB10

a14 in KB10

An a14/a15 is so much more rewarding to drive mainly in terms of torque and free horsepower because of the larger capacity. You wont regret it. Light up 1st, spin second and chirp 3rd. You'll love it. Just give me a buzz if you need a hand.
