#1 Fuel supply/pump problem
Losadel Posted on: 2006/4/28 8:31
Recently my ute developed some new "features" that interferes with the basic principle of a vehicle, getting from point A to point B.

I'll take a quick drive to point B without any problems, but returning to point A seems to get a bit more troublesome every now and them. I'll start up the ute with no problem and drive for oh about 300m and then nothing, no more throttle. After comming to a full stop and taking a closer look under the hood i notice there's no fuel in the carb. This seems odd I'm sure the last time i checked there was still half a tank of gas left. With further inspection I notice there is also berley any fuel in the fuel filter. So my first thought were broken fuelgauge....wrong.

So sitting next to the road for 30mins or so waiting for my lift I decide to give her one more go and bam she starts again WTF? So without delay i make spirited run back to point A.

Now, are these common symetoms for machanical fuelpumps nearing the end of there lives or do I need to go look for rocks in my fueltank?

TIA

If not alot of petrol is getting through the fuel filter maybe you need a new one???

No petrol goes through and after 1/2 hour or so it works fine again but i'm planning on changing the filter aswell. The weird thing is it does this only every now and then like once every second week or so.

Maybe its bad petrol???
We had that once when we went on holidays up north in the camry every now and again petrol would stop flowing then it would start again... Has it gone through a tank since it started happening?

I've gone through a couple of tanks and its the same petrol station i've been using for the last year or 2

your fuel tank is not venting, causing a vacume lock. you stop for a wile, vacume catches up away you go. next time loosen petrol cap?

sounds like vapour lock sort of but to have it happen prior to the fuel filter is weird, ive only ever had it happen before the carb in the fuel rail.

sounds like either the vacuum lock or maybe some crap plugs up the fuel pickup when the tank gets low.

Had the exact same problem with a van I once had. It was rust in the tank that would cause the small fuel filter to clog. It would stop, then wait a while and it would run.

I had a smilar problem with my 1200 that I thought was the fuel pump. I changed the fuel filter, replaced the fuel pump, and it would still die.

The problem was a clog in the fuel line between the tank and the filter. I undid the line from both ends and inserted my air line in there and blew about 120 psi through the line. Some gunk came out the other end, and it has been working fine since then.

On the 1200's there is a vent valve located on the firwall, if this valve does not vent properly like it is sopposed to then the fuel tank cannot vent . It will run for for just a bit ,then die . To test this theory drive it till it dies, open the hood then undo the inlet side of the fuel filter , if it's not venting you will hear the suction when you pull off the fuel line .That means the valve is not operating properly.
