I believe ANDOS has done this on his ute.
Not sure whether this causes issues with water run off when driving in the rain
(e.g. does the water pool at the top of the doors etc.) Maybe you could PM Andos.

I had a wagon with them removed. The water runs off the side down the side windows insead of in the drain and then down the frount or back.

you need good door rubbers that seal real good.

Just grind where the spot welds are in side the door opening. and the whole rail will come off.

If they are realy rust just cut them off. it looked good with out them. The frount door rubber are on ebay for $80 a pair not sure on the back ones. maybe able to use some frount ones.

I'll try to dig up a photo.

Prices for Datsun rubbers can be found here & door seals are under $60 each retail. [+GST where applicable]
The ebay ones sound like a bargain.

In Japan, some Datsun 1200 "Standard" models didn't have drip rails ... so it should be fine. Just when you open the door, water runs onto your head. Same as some new cars.

It probably helps aerodynamics, you might even get better highway fuel economy. That's why the have been removed from new car designs is what I've read.

Flyby's sedan has deleted driprails:

This isn't the best angle, all I could drag up quickly. There is a heap of shots of the actual removal during the buildup somewhere. Datnet maybe? Have a look around. . .

If you do end up removing them, I am still chasing the chrome strip for a couple of driprails. . .
