#1 Question bout spigot bushes

hopefully someone can help me here as ive never seen a spigot bush, i know there in the end of the crank and i know i need one, so heres the question, are they all the same, do i need one out off a particular car? next week im going to a nissan dealer and i just want to make sure he knows what im talking about and get the right part,any help appreciated

Spigot bushes are a small bushing which presses into the end of the crankshaft. The nose of the gearbox input shaft then runs inside this bush. You'll know when you need this bush due to a terrible racket it makes whenever the engine is spinning and the gearbox input shaft is not spinning or is spinning at a differnet speed. For this to happen the clutch must be depressed or slipping. I have found it can be made to playup abit when the engine is idling, the clutch is in and you start selecting gears at random. When its really bad, you won't be able to stop the noise with the clutch thrown out.

I buy mine for about $10 from Carters Clutch at East Maitland NSW. He usually has them in stock.

Getting the old bush out is tricky. Some people fill the crankshaft cavity with grease then get a snug fitting bolt in the bush (about 10mm diameter). Then they wack it with a hammer to create enormous hydraulic pressure which then pushes the spigot bush out. I've tried this and never been successful. We normally carefully cut a slot in the bush with a hacksaw blade then use a flat blade to remove the broken bush.

Forgot to mention...all A-series spigot bushes are the same. I'm not sure where else the same spigot is used, but you shouldn't need to know anyway!

Also, you'll need to OIL the new bush before inserting it and there is a special method. You fill it with oil (dip it in a little dish of oil). Then holding between you thumb and fore finger, create oil pressure by sqeezing the oil - after a couple seconds, you'll see the oil seeping through the bush !!! Its amazing. The material is so porous, the oil runs through it. After you have done this thoroughly (takes about 2 mins), then bush the bush into the crank. Take care not to create burrs on the inner surface as you do it though !!

yeah gearboxes dont like not having spigot bearings, my stumpy skyline box went bang as the bearings in the box gave way due to the enormous axial play, thus smashing 2gear to pieces.

I got mine for about $5, apparently nissan only use one or 2 sizzes right accross their whole range of cars, I don't know how true that is.

How difficult is this to remove and replace when the motor is out? Does removing the flywheel make it any easier? I have a couple of manuals, and can't seem to find anything on this bushing..

You only need to replace it if it is broken/damage/falling apart/worn out. I would remove the flywheel to make the job easy.
A hammer and punch is all thats needed to break it up to remove it. I cant see any reason why you would remove a good bush.

Thanks PhunkDr. I am pulling the motor out to replace the clutch and to put new gaskets since it leaks oil like mad. From the description in the thread above, mine could be bad, and a new one is included in the clutch kit I ordered.

I have a spare A12 and I filled up the bush with grease, and found a bolt that fit somewhat in the bush. It came right out first tap. I hope the one on my other motor comes out as simply as this one did.

Hey bro, if it is a bronze bush, be sure to lube it 1st!
hold the bush on your thumb, fill it with motor oil to the top, then with your other thumb, press together until the oil comes out thru the sides, Nissan also sells a roller bearing for the input shaft bush, not a whole lot of money.

Just curious, but when you install the new one, do you oil it like you described then just tap it in with a rubber hammer, or does it just push in?
