I've made my own paper gaskets before and they work fine. you have to use the right thickness material and not have any other problems.

that noise you said the carb is making reminds me of the moise my weber made when the float was sticking and the fuel level in the bowl was too high.

That "sucking noise" should be even--"kuuuuuuuuuh" no "gaps" in the sound, like--"kuuhkuhhkuuh" see? also spray carb cleaner at the base gaskets, they like to leak. there also should be an "insulator block" about 3/8" tall, gasket on both sides, I ran into that problem once, and the studs were'nt threaded all the way, nuts were tight, but not holding anything down!

Thanks for the info guys. Last night I started the car to see how it ran before i started work on it again. to my surprise, it could idlem uch much better then the day before, but now, when I accelerate quickly, the engine looks like its gonna stall. I checked the acceleration pump. Looks lilke its spraying fuel in, but maybe its not enough. Slower acceleration is fine.

I tapped the carb a little here and there. After that, it could accelerate better but it couldnt idle smoothly. LOL. Its like I can have either proper idling or proper acceleration. I took out the solenoid and cleaned it and put it back.

The bottom gasket didnt look like it was leaking. I tightened the nuts a little bit more (just in case).

Guys, hows wouild you recommend cleanind a carb when its been taken out? Soaking it in carb cleaner? Maybe when I cleaned it, there might be some dirt that got stuck somewhere.

Thanks

I recommend as little cleaning as possible, it is just too easy to break the carb. Remember, it ran good before you tried to fix the leak!

From your description most likely you have a vacuum leak. It can make a sucking sound and not idle well. If you removed the thick carb-to-intake gasket and put a thin one on, the nuts may not go down far enough to secure it (as pointed out).

If you are still using the plastic spacer in between the two gaskets, make sure it is not cracked, that can leak.

If you took the carburetor apart, then you may have the top gasket, or one of the other gaskets:
- on backwards
- on crooked
- the wrong gasket
This is common when the carburetor is taken apart.

Guys, Theres a 'Pin like weight' located in a opening beside the Accelerator pump plunger. Could that be the problem to the lack of acceleration? Is there a ball bearing located on the inside of it?

Hi guys, took the carb to the Mech for a check up. Everything was in place except for a ball bearing in the pump that was missing :). Gonna hook it up tonight and try it out. Keeping my fingers crossed :)

Here's the plastic spacer that rarely, but sometimes get cracked:

carb spacer

It has two gaskets on each side of the spacer. Look for warping or cracking of the spacer, replace if you see any.

ddgonzal, i have that in place and its still good(I think). There was another kind of gasket on top of it. Like a hardened rubber peice which broke. So I replaced it inittially with 1 layer of thick paper gasket. now I have put 2.

Hi everyone. I put the carb in and it runs much better now. In idle when I rev the engine it responds. Idling is smoother too. But while driving, and there a heavy load, like sudden acceleration or hill climbing, the car starts to jerk. Feels like the engine stalls and starts back. I have a feeling that he plugs might be bad. What do you guys think?
