Our Castro Valley friend is correct about playing with shackle lengths, unfortunately that's illegal in NSW, I don't know about Victoria. http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi06.pdfPage 6 Suspension Section b) Cheers, Chris

Nyet comrade! The rear shackle pivots at the top to account for the geometry change as the leaf flattens and rebounds. It is all self correcting. I wish I could insert one of those cool animated diagrams but I'm just barely computer literate!

Why would that be illegal? I mean, are these rules spelled out in an "Encyclopedia of Stuff You Can't Do To a Car" or is it a case by case thing. "Sorry mate. Oy cain't pass that cah, it's got long shackows." Incidentally, that was a phonetic spelling of my terrible rendition of an Australian accent. Sorry.

Longer shackles is what I got in my Suzuki Samurai 4WD, but those are soposed to lift the car up, you are right about flatening the springs, but it will lift the car up too, unless I am missing out something. Jaime

I was guessing he meant get flat (lowered) springs and then lengthen the shackles to raise and fine tune the height. It would require 2 inches on the shackle to raise it 1 inch. As you'd only be lifting the back end of the spring.
Chris.

Hey Dimlight65 your aussie language is not very good as I said it the way you wrote it and me thinks I sound slower like more of an Ameriicaaaaaan! But good try Mate!
But back to the subject, what Dattodude is talking about it being illegal, is in Australia there is a group called the RTA ( roads and traffic authority ) and they govern all motoring within Australia. There is a different RTA for each state in Australia and they have set up this thing called ADR's ( Australian Design Rules ) and this basically governs what modifications are allowed and what is deemed safe and what way modifications are done. Basically the best and safest way things should be done. and if they say that a modification isn't safe it won't pass registration! Also most modifications have to be inspected by an Engineer and they have to give you a written report stating that it meets these ADR's
It may seem harsh but it is for safety and basically avoides shoddy workmanship!
Cheers Steve!

Well, I will admit I do a bad Australian accent! Thanks for the explanation of the process. Sometimes y'all (I had to throw in a little Texan eventually) talk about this or that mod not being legal and I think, "man, I've got it good here!" We just have to worry about stopping and being seen & heard. I mean they stomp on the the brakes from like 20 mph then see if the lights and horn work. Easy-peasy!
