#1 Gearbox Strength

Has anyone used the standard 4 speed on an a15?? i was talking to a guy about getting the gearbox rebuilt and he sed if i get it rebuilt, i wont have a problem. What do you guys think??

Yeah Jeff Taylor said they are quite good...as long as you dont do burnouts in it and full throttle gear changes too often on tarmac with sticky tyres.

So long as you dont DOWN Shift Into Second Harshly to slow the car down ,they seem ok , from what iam told the 120y box is slightly wider in the gear teeth ,

what sort of clutch should i be using? i was leaning towards an exedy heavy duty cushioned button as i can get exedy stuff cheap.
Also is there any way of strengthening the gearbox?
Could any guys from melb recomend gearbox rebuilders as i have only found one place so far!

yes they work well. ive gone through 3 since the warm a15 went in.(some year and a few months ago) jeff taylor is right. the other way to destroy them is to launch (off lights or around 90degree bends) all the time and not stop when 2nd gear starts whining
the 120Y or sunny 56a box's are definitely the best (the younger the better, better than a 30yr old 56).
you can drive around forever in a 56a with a warm a15 as long as u dont ever put the foot to the floor! thats when the torque of the motor hits the gears and wears them!

edit : re the rebuild, i rekon even rebuilding a worn old 56a box is a waste of money, when they break i buy a new-old one (from wrecker) and trade in the old ($200 a pop). a rebuild usually isnt new gears, just synchros and seals and stuff. the gears remain worn and old. it would be sweet if u could just rebuild one and not have a problem

just keep replaceing them, ive only ever broken one but the sedans has always had a noisy 2nd gear, just waiting for it to go... ive got 2 spares lying around and both are good!
The 120 y ones seem to be the best, the sunny ones have an additional 4th gear sensor thing that can foul on the underside sometimes... did in the coupe.

As for the clutch, exceddy is great for a warm a15.... for the $$$ spent

Standard 4-speeds are no problem for the A15. Just make sure you use a 60-series 4-speed, like Nissan did. The 56-series box is not as strong and was only used behind A12s and A13s.

hey dd. There isnt a thing in the tech section on 4 speed gearboxxs. only 5's
Want to know what the 60-series 4 speed came out of. and would it handle #### from a, say 115hp a15 ??

the 60 series gearboxes are fitted to B210's(US 120Y's) and sunny's (b310's) I think they are also fitted to A14 powered "Bakkies" too!

not entirely sure about that one though...
