#1 Stock A12 Turbo project...
Topgear Posted on: 2006/8/31 17:01
I want to make a "J-pipe" turbo setup that can bolt easily onto a std A12-A15 motor.

I have already done my other A12 Turbo project which so far has 96kw atw. It works great but there was "A LOT" of work time wise with the manifolds and exhaust etc. I am soon going to put an A15 bottom end with a cam under this setup and see what happens then

I want to do the "J-pipe" set up straight out of my shed at home only with parts you can buy from the wreckers. This can show that with some simple ideas and a bit of thinking we can all have a simple turbo setup

I am after a Turbo of a "Daihatsu Charade Turbo" and an SU off a 180BSSS. Some might say the charade turbo is to small but I want something that will boost at low rpm and have low rpm torque.

I need the basics to start welding some piping up in the shed. I already have a cheap tired 81 Sunny that I can fit it all to and try it.

I want to run about 8-10lbs boost at low rpm and be reasonably driveable.

If anyone can let me know where I might get these parts it would be greatly appreciated.

I will keep everyone up to speed as to where I am with it and show dyno sheets along the way also....

"Diahatsu charade turbo to small. Uno Turbo T2 or or 1.6l VW diesel's KKK or new GT15 garrett cheap and works well. Try D & F cam profile. Have build lots of turbo manifolds. Have 15 in my shed. Also made custom EFI intakes with our local GOTECH Managment system. Uno turbo injectors. This is our cheapest way. Or a whole Uno Turbo Efi and Timing works well and easy to set up. EXCELLENT timing on Marelli box. Will try and load up pic's

Topgear I have a pair of carbys off one of those old twin Hitachi setups,I would be happy to donate one to such a noble cause.

PM me with your address.

i run two diahatsu charade turbos on an a14, have also used to on an a12 and a15 before

with the two i get full boost before 3000rpm and had upto 15psi without mucking around with wastegate acctuators, never heated them up either (the problem is keeping the boost down now so i dont blow too many motors) im using stock internal motors, blow thru turbo setup through intercooler into factory injection, we should catch up, im in ringwood area

its possible one would be ok for 10psi or less application (read: stock internal motor)

just had one rebuilt, cost $300
gettig another done atm

Thanks for the info 1200rallycar, I think 10lbs would be max for what im trying to achieve I would start with maybe 6 and tune it from there and see how I go?? Im trying for something with little lag and reasonable throttle response.

Im going to use the carbie in the same fashion as I have with my car, its simple and easy...

I will hunt around for a turbo and go from there, if someone knows where I can get one that would be greatly appreciated Quote:

I'm running a Garrett from a Merc VITO Van.

The are a tad bit bigger than a T2
EX-AR= 0.43 IN-AR= 0.45

I am most surprized with this units responce to the A15

here is how I made my manifold.

and on the engine

very impressive for a simple J pipe set up, but its too neat for the traditinal j pipe set up.

T2's are a good size but due to age and design they are known not to be too good for boosting, but on an a12-15 should be reliable enough compared to an exa.

At least T2 are cheap to get. Go to local perfomance places that upgrade turbos as a lot of jap import twin turbos have a simila ar ration to t2.... and they are usually cheap as they cant get rid of them easily with a lot of people upgrading to larger singles.

I found a T2 at a wrecker, they want $450, is that the going rate?? I was hoping to spend about $300ish???

Idealy I would like something a little smaller so as to get boost at very low rpm....??

I am going to have a look at a KKK K03 of a 1.8litre Audi. I have been told they are very small for a 1.8litre motor, very close in size to a T2 off an EXA...

I can get 1 turbo off a VG30 but its a little larger than the T2 off the EXA, I really want to make sure I get a good size turbo for the job. What ever will work well on an A12 will be VERY good on an A15

I would like to use something that is readily available and cheap for anyone to get. Remember most people would do this because they most likely couldnt afford an SR or CA conversion...

I can get small turbo's off 550cc Daihatsu Mira's but I think they will be too small...

Cheap, simple, but effective is the plan...
