A bloke who has been building BMW gearboxes for the last 20 years told me that the sinchro rings on

When a synchro [baulk] ring wears, it usually wears on the tapered inner face, so when it's worn, it's worn. They are all interchangeable in the 56 & 56A gearboxes, so I suppose that you could use the second gear one, which is usually the one most worn, in the first gear position as not many people select first at speed, then use the first gear one in the second gear position.
Really, if you have the box apart & the ring is worn, just replace it with a new one for years of happy motoring. No, they are not 'reversible'

I have a 60A 5 speed- If I had a buggered 56 series four speed I would get another one from the trader for $50 I would have thought that they are matched to the size of gear so how would you use first in second and second in first?New ones are around $600 a set- on my box, first, second and third are all a bit sketchy. Any ideas on transferable parts from the Vanette box?

From what I know, the syncros from a vanette box will fit. So will the input shaft and laygear.
Never done it but I'm chasing those two parts to fix my old 5 speed. Like what has been said earlier, no the syncros can't be reversed but can be swaped around to a less used gear. You can view topic.
