wondering if anyone else here has sat threw this torture??

I feel for you mate..........

I was one of those that left school early to start an apprenticeship..... Partly because my maths wasn't good enough to get into uni.

After 10 yrs as a tradie, I decided to try & teach an old dog new tricks & signed up for an Engineering degree.

I remember now that that 1st maths subject was HELL...... Funny - Now when I look back the content seems easy.

One thing I learnt - It's not how smart you are, It's all about your work ethic.

Good luck .

But i mean really... when is anyone at all going to use a quadratic equation again

The only thing i can remember that they MITE use it for is financial situations but even so... I swear half the stuff they teach you is completley useless for everyday life, the maths you learn in physics/physical science's is way more useful for real life applications.

PIGDOG i was in the exact same boat as you, the 3 hour a month student - passed alrite tho. here in tassie specialst maths is called specialised maths, or stage 3 pure. Applied maths is like finance, worded questions and more 'workforce' questions i think...

Either way i was not good at maths !

Keep at it man
Dave

work ethic hey, im screwed
ive always relied on how smart i am, got me threw midyears nicely

specialist maths has all the physics maths in it, just lots more
mostly application stuff that doesnt have a set way of doing it, just have to be able to identify how you should start a problem then go from there.....yes the starting is the problem

im good at maths(my top 4 subjects for my ENTER will be english and 3 maths) , im just over trying to remember this stuff from half a year ago

oh well ive still got 3 weeks till the exam, plenty of time to remember

PS. yes vectors are very much a waste of time

vectors are nice for driving the car. but either it's intuitive, or stay in the passengers seat with the slide rule.

I disagree with most of what has been said here. I too hate maths, but all the maths topics here are usefull and get used especially if you do Mech Eng. They teach it for a reason.

Every part of a car for instance can be modelled using maths...

Saying most maths is useless is like an architech saying CAD programs are useless..

Maths is only useless when you don't know how to apply it.

Ok then, explain how useful complex numbers will be for you in your chosen career as a mechanical engineer?

complex numbers are useless, they model non real stuff, in a real world this doesnt work

some of the stuff is good, well most of it, but there are some things that are just crap
