If you are staying non turbo go the A15, if you are turbo charging go the CA18DET. (IMO)

They cost about the same and you'd be paying less for petrol with the CA18DE and you'd have a 5 speed.

A15 is easier, CA18DE is better and cheaper.

Okay what is it DO CA18 conversions really cost 5000+ or not?

A15 ~$500 an depending on "wot" model ute you have have it will drop in. You will have to upgrade brakes but that should be it.

He did say 'worked' A15 so that's at least a few k there I assume with headwork, carbies, extractors, cams, rockers.

CA18 wouldn't be worked, stock, crossmember, fuel system and clutch are some of the expenses, plus a lot more mucking around.

yep an A15 costs about $500, plus preparation, cam, head work, ignition, exhaust, carbs, tuning, fuel system, cooling system, diff upgrade (depending on how you drive it), brakes and all the small things that add up in between.
My A15 cost me almost $5000 from start to finish

Go the ca18de conversion. An a15 is ok but you can only get so much power.
Once you drive a ca for a while with its power and fuel economy a worked a15 seems a bit of a waste of time, plus you get a 5 speed, which you will appreciate.
When you are after some real power you will end up doing the ca conversion anyway, so if you already got a natural ca, it will be simple to put a turbo ca in.
Ive got a worked a15(twin 40's, cam, headwork,ect) and a ca18det powered ute and while the a15 sounds good and goes alright, Its got absolutely nothing on the ca version, and its pretty much stock except for a front mount and a split dump.

Spend your money on doing the ca conversion straight up, you'll save money in the long run.

i say CA just because parts are easy to come by and you have the luxury of a five speed.

Get a worked A15 from someone who is doing the CA conversion, shouldnt cost much more than a grand all up , worked A15 has all the power a sane person would need in a 700kg sub compact, if you want to be blowing off WRXs and Porsches get the CA.
