I reckon by the time you've bought yourself a welder, learnt how to weld, manage to get it welded and painted, you may as well have taken it to a panel beater and have the satisfaction knowing its been done properly. Also, arches aren't all that easy due to the curve in them. I've started to do my rust repairs, but i'm thinking about getting the rest done professionally.

Your looking at around $1000 for a small welder that'll do the job. gassless will do it, i use on all the time for mine, but it takes a little more practice. Unless you have the need for a welder, and still want to do it yourself, hire a small gas one for a weekend.

gasless suxs no where near as neat as a gas mig because the gas helps cool the metal as u weld

It is that hard...........

I had 10 years trade experience as a fitter & turner, so I was a pretty good welder + heaps of experience working with metal & I still handed my ute over to a panel beater in the end.
Granted - It was the whole car, not just a rust spot.

There's a reason why panel beating is a 10 year apprenticeship.

For something that small, you'll probably endu up paying more for the equipment......I'd just hand it over & pay the money.

I reccon have a go at a small patch of rust, if you do a crappy job and want to give up on it then it wont cost much for a pro to fix. If you do alright and want to keep going at it yourself then work your way up. Building cars is a learning experience and if you read allot of these forums it seams most people really blow their budgets out for one reason or another. I think the main reason is they pay others to do their work. Some people are just not car builders, some people are lazy and others just have a go. This should open a few cans of worms.
