#1 Oil presure = 0 ... Why?
B210sleeper Posted on: 2006/12/28 22:37
So i'm going along, all of a sudden oil pressure warning light comes on, check gauge, really is 0 psi...

I have oil, haven't changed anything in a long time, what can go wrong and cause there to be no oil pressure.

I checked the pressure regulator spring in the pump and it's not broken.

Seems like the options are:
gear fell off pump
shaft of pump broke
impeller slipped off shaft
pressure regulator spring broke

what else can go wrong?

Not sure Where the pressure sender is located in the system but you could have a clogged filter and the oil is being sent throught the relief valve. I recon utheremate might be right thought

the pressure sender and light are in the usual spot on the pump, the filter has a block off plate and has a relocated filter.

making me think i have the in/out plumbed wrong and got away with it for a long time???

the "center" of the oil filter is in or out? from the pump...

had the oil changed recently and got a new filter, even checked the oil before going out.

i have a spare new pump so it'll get fixed tomorrow, just wondering what would cause that.

pressure releif thing stuck open.....
pretty sure oil goes in the middle and out the sides of the filter...well kinda sure any way

it's been this way for many 1000's of miles, went 1000 miles in a few days even.

I was thinking the pressure relief thing stuck open too. I didn't try pushing the thing in to see if it moved, the spring went in easily, so I didn't think it was that, or do you mean the other one? with the sealed in spring...

If the oil filter is clogged, you won't lose pressure in the system (unless it is an archaic filter, these days they all have a bypass system).

If the bypass relief in the oil filter sticks open, that won't cause pressure drop. It only means your oil won't be filtered.

Oil filters are nearly foolproof these days.

Chances are that's where the problem started -- that's what has changed most recently in your engine.

Last year this happened to my neighbor, he was driving along and the oil pressure failed suddenly. It was soon after the oil had been changed. Eventually we discovered a bit of gasket stuck in the oil passage going into the block. The filter was fine. We never did figure out where the gasket material came from, but it blocked the oil system dead as a doorknob.

Go step by step: Change the filter , check , change the bypass plate , check , change the pump and check pressure. This process shouldn't take more than hour.

i'll go get a few filters, since i'll need to change em frequently after i get this fixed.

can't find my FSM, where does the oil go?
sucked up by the pump, through gears, past pressure sender, to filter, then back into the block...

or is the pressure sender on the return side? so if oil isn't going through the block, no pressure at all?

stupid question... could my sump pickup have worked loose?

this pump has few miles on it and the engine doesn't have anything to plug up a filter inside it.
