can anyone tell me where this terminal on the earth strap is supposed to go to. it doesnt reach the starter motor - but the positive one does - and there is nowhere really else for it to go as far as i can see.

Well, in 1000's & 1200's it bolts to the timing case with one of the small timing case bolts.

hmmm. i suppose the 1 with the bigger washer on it!
its just taken too long now to swap the engine over and i cant remember what wires went where (alliteration not intended).

It is supposed to hold on to the engine block. One side is bolted on to the body. Your cable is already fastened to the body, the other end can go to one of the engine mount bolts on the engine side. That is how I got it affixed in my B210 and in my jeep.
Today I was working on my 140J and the ground strap was afixed to the body bellow the battery, at the battery seat ( metal base where the battery rests ) The other end was affixed to one bolt that was situated just behind the petrol pump and lower than said pump. That is an L18 motor. I do not remember a similar bolt on the A engine.

No problem, bolt it on to one of the engine mount bolts on the engine side.( not on the body side, rubber part is in between body and engine). I can see some naked cable there in your pix, make sure you cover it with electric tape.
