i just turned 18, bought myself a datsun 1200 with the intention of doing it up. its unregistered and the motor is shot. for $3500 i can get the 1.2 rebuilt with oversized pistons, racing cam, forged pistons, roller rockers, webber carby, 5spd gear box and an LSD. Is it worth it? Spendin that much on the smaller engine, am i wastin my time, will it be poweful.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks, Dane

Well what are they going to charge for that ?

If not you can put in another a12 for about $300 all up.

It sounds cheap to do all that work - but it still wont make 100hp at the wheels....depends how much power you are looking for. It will go faster with a A14/15 as torque=acceleration, horsepower=bragging rights

I reckon that's far too expensive for the rebuild. In regards to results..

If you must do it, buy a SR20DE and gearbox for $800-1200 and plan around that instead of the A-series.

The used car market is flooded with decent cars at the moment.

Get a cheap low miles replacement A14 for now, no eng cert required, and keep your eyes open for someone elses ex-race A15 setup. It's not a good idea, that you spend all this money, when it's your only car, and funds are probably tight in your life right now.

If you just want to blow people off at the lights, go buy a V8 VR-VX Commodore for $5000-$10000.

i wouldnt do it

keep your eyes and ears open you can often pick up a hot little a series for a few hundred.. especially when the seller is doing a conversion and just wants it out of the way

5speed will be nice, but the 4 will do, and you can do without the lsd

and that will leave you with a few thousand extra change to do with it what you will

i think you could get better performance for the money, maybe just put a 2nd hand a series back in it and wait for a turbo setup to turn up or a worked motor. You could just run a h165ute diff as a cheap diff upgrade aswell.
