You recommend using a Lucas alternator on a Datsun?

Ever wonder why every spare parts shop has Lucas parts?
Because they sell well as a result of a great need for spares or replacement assemblies.

I remember back in the days of generators we had two blokes in the electrical shop overhauling starters & generators. We would overhaul three Lucas C40 generators for every one of anything else.
The company used the slogan "Lucas, King of the road" but they were better known as the 'Prince of darkness"

Bosch & Hitachi are a guarantee of a good product.

The original 1200 alternator produced about 35 amps. The higher the electrical drain, the higher the drain on engine power to run the alternator.
A 100 amp job at full output would probably tax my stock 1200's ability to keep it running. Placing the trans in drive would then probably kill it outright.

Why do the British drink warm beer? They all got Lucas fridges.

So, is there a straight swap/upgrade? More output, externally reg'ed with the same connector? Mine is either weak or my headlamps are too much for it, as my indicators barely blink at tickover (and no stereo yet). What about a Z or 1600?

Sure is. The Lucas unit from a Panther Rio fits right into the Datsun 1200.

Or for less exotic alternators, see club wiki - Alternator Swaps.
