definately ditch the handles, my re-sprayed ute still has them and its the one place that there is lots of chips and stuff ruining the otherwise really clean paint job

Ours is welded up, and yes, it is full of bog.

It's a matter of perception. I love the shaved look and don't mind bogging up the welds to give it a nice formed tub. But I can also understand why someone would want to keep the handles, the old school cool kinda look is also pretty sweet.

My opinion would be remove them only because you're going for a hard cover. If you weren't you'd be mad not to keep them.
