With electronic distributor, set the timing exactly as you would with any distributor. Directions: Ignition Timing

I think the 3000rpm advice is for full-throttle drag racing or something.

try 14 degrees advance at idle, it will also help smooth out the lumpy idle if you have one

How many variations of distributor advance cams are there?

Hitachi will stamp a "advance number" on the distributor cam. This with the weights and springs will determine how much mechanical advance you have. If there is a "10" on it, means 20 degrees at the crank.
[EDIT: you need to remove the breaker plate to see that advance cam... ]

So if you rev the engine to 3000 rpm. Use a fancy timing light, check to see you have full advance (about 34 degrees) at that rpm. Back at idle it should be around 14, as noted previously.

I'm a long time roadster (R16/U20) and 510 nut, lots of variation over the years on those models. Not that familiar with A series... but same idea applies.
