ok i might aswell ask here.

how does twin stage super charging work?

i was under the impression that there was some sort of gear box for the pulleys?

oh what would you need to stop a supercharger flying to peices at about 40,000rpm?

chris

What's the fascination, these systems were for prop planes? Also, what would spin a supercharger to 40 000rpm? Prop planes are like trucks, they run at an extremely low rpm.

Anyways, you're on the right track with the second gearbox. It's a rather complex system for one developed so long ago. I could probably latch onto some info for you if you really want.

Is it for a plane, because it wouldn't be beneficial on a car. Unless you mean twin-supercharger and not staged. Twin superchargers have been done before.

If you are talking about twin-staged supercharging you should think of a single turbo, single supercharger setup instead. This was the next step in aeronautical design, and has also been used in cars many times before. I've seen 4-5 Corolla's in Sydney alone with this setup.

If I knew your application I could help with more specific advice.

The Merlin engine was made in the later high altitude versions with two speed, two stage supercharging.

This was to maintain boost in the rarified upper atmosphere, but single stage, single speed blowers were all that was needed for naval fighters as they operated at much lower levels, just like cars do.

Exactly right Dodge, man you know a bit. I can't understand in what way this setup would benefit an automotive application though.

Those Merlins are one awesome bit of machinery. The flames they shoot out the pipes on landing are something to behold.

no no its not for a plane.

my engine design needs postive pressure on the intake. but isnt forceful engough on the exhaust so turbo charging isnt an option. unless its twin charged

but thats just unesscary weight and superchargers sound cooler

but i was reading about the v16 brm. and i know alot of the pre war "formula 1's" were supercharged and producing big horse power.

just asking really

Ah, the BRM, awesome power, but pretty much useless.

Are you building a salt lake racer perhaps? In a straight line the BRM's were quick, under brakes and acceleration they struggled.
