go with a Ute diff, they are a bit hard to come by but well worth it, to get alot of horses, just bore out the cylinders and get a gx head and do some extesive work on it, or buy my gx head I have for sale, it's had alot of work done to it,
and go with twin webbers, and a NOS system
cheers damo

To get that kind of HP out of 1200ccs, you're going to have to rev it very high, with all that entails. The newer Hondas are factory designed to rev high with have variable cams etc. The advantage your 1200 will have is far lower weight (except for the original Civic, which is just a little heavier than a 1200).

Rather than build up an A12, it would be cheaper to fit an L18 or KA24.

I've got the HP your after out of a A12A, with great torque figures as well.
The cost approx NZD20k (USD10k), so hope you have a reasonable budget.

1200_hotrod, since you are in the US, I highly recommend buying an entire 79-82 210 (B310) car for $250 bucks or so, and put the engine, 5-speed and driveshaft/tailshaft in your B110. B310 wagons usually have the A15, sedan/coupes the A14.

The 5-speed will lower the revs on the freeway, less noisy too.

Not sure if this'll beat the Hondas you referred to but ... easy to swap in. See the Tech Section article What's the best engine to put into a 1200?.
