is changing the wiring from an external regulated alternator, to an internally regulated one, something you can do ya self, or is it a job for a qualified auto sparky???
Cheers

It is very easy to do yourself. Generally there is one wire from the alternator to the battery. Much simpler than the original setup. Even a regular three-wire setup is simple to wire.

See Alternator for discussion of Ford Falcon EA swap.

GM alternator swap
In the US the GM 'single wire" alternator used to be the popular swap, since they were the first to have an internal regulator, were commonly available (read, relatively inexpensive) and for those stymied by three wires (BAT, IGN and idiot light), the "one wire" promised simplicity.

The GM alternator is available in versions for 50 amps to over 100 amps.

Better alternatives?

Of course, lighter is better, so no point in loading up your 1200 with extra weight if you don't need it. Perhaps a high-efficiency "mini" alternator from a newer Subaru or Toyota would be the way to go: extra amps, but not extra weight.

Sorry I am a bit late to answer this,
Demojob the answer to your question of who its a job for, really depends on how smart you are! lol.
But really internal reg alternators only need 2 and sometimes 3 wires.
1 thick one from battery to alt
1 thin from alt to the dash charge light,
and sometimes 1 ignition 12volt supply to the alt.
I think if you look in the links ddgonzal has supplied it will take you to a previous discussion of this. quote" i think"
