i'll take credit for spreading the word that stanza struts are crap, might be all good when on the track and there arent many bumps

but for a street cars thats at a reasonable ride height, they are just ####
i guess sunny struts are still worse

but seriously after reading on this site that the stanza stuff was what to use, then finding my car bottoming out all the time with decent front springs...well i wasnt to happy, luckily i had a nice stash of other datsun struts that i could play with to see what would work so it didnt cost me anything extra
but for other people that would have to either pay heaps to go get the strut tower shortened for different shocks or to go buy some more struts, well thought they should be told that there are better options that will give enough travel and better brakes for not really any extra cost

the aftermarket springs for them are junk.

for street use I ran Gemini coils with the progressive rate part still on. No bottoming out, best ride quality ever in any 1200 I've owned, and very nice handling.

im running 200b rears in mine atm, were progressive rate before the angle grinder got to them
wouldnt say they are soft(not the hardest either), but with 200b struts, ive only managed to bottom it out 3 or 4 times in 6 months...usually a big dip at 100kph when im not expecting it
might have to look into gemini ones though just to compare

but when all you have to do is change the spring perch i dont see why other strut options arent advertised more

I'll have to say the 280zx / 200b struts cut down and made into coil overs make the little datsun feel like a much more expensive car in handling, it's noisy and rough on the crap roads we have here, but it sticks in corners like glue, enough braking power you can threshold brake all you want and it feels tighter.

Overall no complaints, plenty of new cars aren't as nice to throw around in the twisty mountains, and the ones that are cost lots more and are AWD.

good info, if i ran the right offset rims or proper bolt on allen key type spacers, with plenty flaring, would 205s on the front be possible, people run 195s relitivelly easy so i think it should be possible, depends on avaliable tyres i guess.

B210_sleeper, did you cut your 280zx struts down at all? I found they are short enough as is.
Cheers

Sikdatto, ive had 205/50/15's on skyline stockies, needed a bit of guard work, mainly at the front, and lipped the guards with a rolling pin. this was on sunny struts.

OK, what I ended up using in the 1200 for the rear leaf pack was:

1200 main leaf
120Y 2nd leaf under that - this is almost as long as the 1200 main leaf.
on top of the 1200 main leaf I used a cut 120Y main leaf as a reverse half leaf. Cut just behind the diff mount that sits on the springs and also cut at the front just before the main leaf eye - round off the edges so they don't wear into the 1200 main leaf too quickly.
then on top of that I used the shortest 1200 leaf upside down.

It looks a bit dodgy, but it works.

Go see john at SA chassis Brompton... he fixed my other 1200 when i did that exact thing, but mine was worse. The front wheel ended up coming completely through the footwell.

Oh, and that rear cut was my uncles fault... he reversed into a pole at a shopping centre. I have a whole stack of pics if your interested....
