The 12a in my ute has diffulculty getting warmed up...fair enough its cold these days.
So after a bit of revving it seems to be ok...bit jittery at idle but when I go to drive at power on it started to give out rapid backfiring popping noises...seems to be getting worse.

Im pretty sure its not the mixture or the carby so naturally I assume its the timing...but after driving it for a while...the problem dissapears?

So I thought...water in the dizzy/electrecs? nope sprayed before last trip and still the same problem.
Still I dont think my timing or vacums are spot on...but why would this problem be going away?

There are two kinds of backfire: Backfire at the inlet, and backfire out the exhaust pipe. Which kind are you hearing?

I would be looking at the automatic choke. Does it have the stock mazda kind?

Pretty sure its from the exhaust end...goes from a rapid popping noise to almost a gurgle.

Its a 32/36 carby DGEV ...that appears not hooked up...um is that the problem? If so how do I wire it up?

Seems strange though that Its never happened to me before...and it still seems to happen even when the engine is what should be warm enough.

DGEV means electric choke. If you don't wire up the choke wire it will start fine, and idle fine at first. Then it will run worse the warmer the engine gets (assuming the choke is actually operating).

A very rich mixture can cause backfiring out the exhaust, so take the air cleaner off and inspect the choke. The butterfly valve must be fully opened when the engine is fully warm.

This is on a 12a rotary engine?

lol no a12 sorry.

No its definetly having a harder time than usual getting started and under power when driving...seems ok when I floor it though. However,it seems to run better the warmer it gets?

Wheres the best place to run the wire from?

Connect the choke wire to the + side of the ballast resistor (the non-coil side).
