i agree. i think with the stock engine you have to drive it much harder to keep the revs and speed up around corners which can get quite dangerous. i have a mate with a worked L20 in his datsun 1600 and when we go for a drive i have to go alot faster than him around corners just so i can keep up.

PIGDOG- did u try to fit a standard 4 speed box? i hear they are harder to fit then a 5 speed my 5 speed is long and then so woohoo!

Probably also depends how far back against the firewall you mount the engine too, and how low on the crossmember.

I've got away with a lot with a stumpy 5 speed in my white coupe by have the engine sit as absolutely low as possible, means less hammering of the tunnel, and better centre of gravity and weight distribution.

mine cant really go any lower as the sump would be sitting on the drag link, and there isnt alot of sump
and it seems to be sitting about as far back as every one elses

and she's mounted very close to the firewall. also mounted it as low as possible for the same reasons as mildman mentioned

the bit i had trouble with was where the tunnel meets the floor, it was crumpled into a stronger shape and didnt crumple any further

also doesnt look like you could have "massaged" the bellhousing area of the tunnel much more on the passengers side
