My next door neighbour bieng a GT Ford fan, suggested that since I would have to cut down a diff housing anyways to fit in, that i should go for a common one, like the banjo from an old ford/holden. Heaps lying around, plenty of ratio options, including LSD.
He reckons that he can source me one for $100, cut down with new axles, for about $1000, then plenty of wheel and ratio options.
Not yet decided , but its not going to be any more expensive than doing it to a H165.

I considered that also, however the main problem is weight. They weigh a tonne and it is also unsprung.

when you say unsprung, what do you men by that?

also, as far as weight goes, wiegh a tonne is clearly a slight overestimation, but how much heavier are they over say a H165?

Unsprung mass is that portion of the car weight that is not supported by the springs. This would include, the rear axle assembly complete with wheels as well as a portion of the front suspension.

It's the ratio of unsprung mass to sprung mass that influences ride quality. This is why some cars have IRS & inboard rear brakes are another level of sophistication.

why would you go a bango diff when the VN borg warner diffs are just as common and probably just as cheap....and you can get 4 stud axles and disc brakes standard

righto pigdog

that even makes better sense. Didnt think of that. Will have to investigate that a but more now too.

As the to the P411 saga, its a dead course of action i think. sorry to the Perth boys who are trying this.... I dont think that there is an easy way to fit an LSD to a 1000. cut and Paste in something else seems to be the most viable option.

As for unsprung weight, that makes sense to me Dodgeman,
so.... If the diff, housing and attached bits are hung below the spring, then the whole setup is unsprung. (if you unbolted the diff housing from the springs it would drop away)
but, if the whole setup is on top of the spring then none of it is unsprung. (unbolting the housing fom the springs would leave it in place)

Is this a reasonable assumption?

And that the less unsprung weight you have, the better the ride quality?

ok finally i checked it out and yeh reuby has it right there is no easy answer.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news chris but the 1000 axles are waaay to small for the H165 center - it's like a the ole sausage down the hallway mate .

Back to the drawing board!

hey beattie, any news on the 165 LSD into 411 housing conversion?
as I know of a 411 rotting away in some old dear's driveway ;)

another option would be the borg warner as found in the VN-VR commonwhores and EA - EF falcons. yes way too wide for a 1200 - BUT *drumroll* the R31 skyline uses the same diff but the center is offset to one side. I've heard that you get the longer side cut down to match the shorter side and it's a common conversion for KE25 -KE55 corollas. I shouldnt think the 1200 would be much different of a track.
Having a diff in this family then opens your options to a myriad of ratios and easy to find LSD's .
though that winters diff would look trick polished up under a neat 1200 wouldnt it?

to use an r31 diff in a 1000 i would think that you would need to cut down 2 long axles, as the centre would be offset way to far if you used a short axle as the long axle

how much shorter is a 1000 diff compared to a 1200 one?
