Hey Guys,
I am in need of some painting advice.
I am repainting my 1200 Coupe. I have chosen my colour Mazda Phantom Blue. Before winter I stripped the roof and primered the it. I quickly found out that primer is not waterproof.

I was thinking of priming it with something like chassis black. Was wondering if I could topcoat it with acrylic.

Someone has painted it with some house paint so It looks like crap. Also I have replaced a few panels with ones from my other coupe. So I got a multi-coloured car.

There are some products like that you can use, but they usually require another topcoat before you can apply paint.

If you aren't going to paint it right away, ask someone at an auto paint store to recommend something you can put on there.

Some catalyzed primers will work. There is also a sealer that can be used.

I would also recommend deciding what brand of paint you are ultimately going to use. The store can also recommend a primer/sealer that is compatible with the paint. Generally speaking, it is better to stick with one brand of products so each of them will work with each other.

Because im not made of money.
Theres loads of rust that needs repairing and the quotes that I get from sprayshops are too expensive.

Otherwise yes I would chuck it into a sprayshop and say "make it look good"

hell no! dont you even think of using acrylic, that stuff dosent last these days,it'll look like a flakey vl commodore in no time! use a catalysed clearcoat that complies with the colour coat brand. spend some time sanding back the house paint(ugggh) til its all gone.do the bodywork weld, bog, etc.finish with 180grit.primer it and guide coat with flat black(even a spraycan will do).block it out with 600wetdry then 800wetdry.then layer that phantom blue on real nice, clear it and hey presto youre rollin in style again....

o.k here goes Retal052. as posted earlier, get rid of that house paint either rub it out or as i would do paint strip it firist!!.
This will show you and hidden suprises under all that sh!t too. I only recommend acrylic if it is a solid paint as you said you dont have much $$$. Just put heaps of coats on so you can rub back any orange peel and buff it flat and shiney, but like K-DOGG mentioned acrylic doesnt look the best in metalic.
Also with primer if your going to leave it on for a while use a guide coat as this will help with soaking moisture.
I hope this helps, post some pics when you paint the beast!! Good luck
