#1 basic upgrades
mindprobe Posted on: 2003/4/9 13:47
Hi!

I will start a rustoration of 1970 Coupe, i will keep it mainly original, the only eventual mods i will make will have to be straight bolt in, and only for daily use improvement, i'm thinking of a a12 gx head and other gx mods if i can find those, a 120y swaybar and my doubts are for the brakes, what can i do about those without changing the struts? is there a bigger disc option? and what about callipers, for the standard disc or the eventual bigger disc? and the rear drums, is ther any mod for those?

thanks!

another question, i was checking the disc brake option by DBA

http://www.dba.com.au/pdf/0003_16_07_02a.pdf

and they have a disc with 212 mm diameter for b110 and b210 until 11/75, and a 219 mm diameter for b210 from 11/75, does the bigger later one fits the early cars? if yes i guess it would be the simpliest upgrade possible

anyone ever checked this?

thanks!

Hey mindprobe, are you talking about a Datsun 1000 (1970 Coupe)? Or is yours a genuine Japan-only 1970 model Datsun 1200?

Well, i still dont have the car documents with me, are being send by mail, the owner is advertising him has a 1970 datsun 1200 coupe model, i don't know if it's unlikelly or not, i didn't see the car but i bought anyway because they are so rare in portugal, it's complete with a few rust but not much, says the owner , it misses the rear window it was sold for something like 400 USD or 650 USD, i will have to pay probably a little more for delivery, i dont know if it is a good price overthere but it's a nice one where i live

Sounds like a good price.

Any of the strut modifications we've been talking about will work. The easiest is probably the 75-78 B210 struts with slightly bigger brakes, but the "Stanza" (1980 "510"/Violet A10) is far better.

The A14 or A15 is the easy way for more power, if these engines are readily available in your country. The A12GX parts would be fun as well.

Take a look at the Tech Section for some starting ideas.

The first 1200 was produced in Jan. 1970 (according to Nissan documents), which was referred to as 1970 model (in Japan called "Showa 45 year"). But for the US and Australia at least, they weren't sold until 1971 models (probably starting around Oct 1970).

From memory the wheel bearings are different. Later 120Ys used the same bearings as 180Bs I think. Whether the axle dia. is the same I don't know. Not much help really am I?

Thanks for your replys guys!

I know it's not a big upgrade, but that's not what i'm after, i think i'll try and get one of the later bigger disc from a scrapyard and give it a try, anyway datsun 1200 were one of the most used racecars in early 70's in Portugal and nowadays we have the Datsun 1200 Trophy again!!! so i should be able to find some better race breaks that fits the original struts, i don't want to make big changes, but if i see the car is not safe i will have to go to one of the solutions presented in this site.

For the brakes check out an american company called Wilwood , they make a caliper called a dynalight , it will fit over the standard 1/2" non vented rotor. You will just have to make up a mounting plate. The calipers are $130 U.S. This site also has the mod to add 280Z calipers. On your motor you can use the A14 valves in the standard head and use weber 32/36 DGEV carb
