one question ?.......why.........just because you can. Would you take the whole concept another step further and incorporate AWD as well. If successful it would be one speedy piece of machinery.

On a scale of 1 to 10, this would be a for easiness. Well, the L26 has been done. Use the search box for the discussion not too long ago about the RB26 swap.

for a brief 'crazy' moment l was going to do this to my 1600. Then l measured it and found that the cam cover wouldn't even fit!!!!

Yet alone a 1200, but hey l also would have laughed at putting a jet engine into a car 6 months ago!!

John Taylor is quietly thinking of putting an Evo 3 AWD running gear into a 1200. If anyone can do it its John. He is a legend with these cars.

I'm toying with the concept of using a Subaru transaxle and making an AWD 1200.
Idea 1: Subaru EJ-25 up front like Fuji Heavy intended.
Idea 2: EJ-25 behind the seats, "front" outputs driving rear wheels and a transfer case sending the "rear" output to the front wheels.
Idea 3: Nissan VG-33 V6 behind the seats with the same drive layout as idea 2.

Since the sixties several 4wd sports car with brainpopping power have been used in heavily sponsored race cars from Indy, f1 to Le mans however the best, most reliable and fastest have been and still are RWD in lightweight cars.
The datsun is lightweight and with its small wheelbase and track should remain that way for racing. Le mans is the equivalent of the hardtop f1 cars. If a 1200 should be 4wd then it should be as light as a 1200 rwd with the same engine spec to be able to compete with it or say its better.
As a pure exersice in difference... yes it will be different but a late lightweight fwd 4 cylinder turbo engine midmounted behind the back seats of 1200 would be simpler (well if you have the resources to go 4wd in the first place) and with the same hp would eat it like a snack. Otherwise a lightweight gaerte 340hp NA chev based 4 cyinder with a late cadillac fwd gearbox all mounted behind the back seats would be lighter and easier to work on (OHV see pic on gaerte in photo section) and has big hp off the shelf everything from chev even a big variable nissan turbo on it would take it further ahead of the evo engine and would be a little nissan touch of breathing to an otherwise non nissan heart.

Hey dimlight. If you wanna go fowards instead of backwards check out some of the VW manx and comby websites. They love sticking ej20's in their cars and would know how to put it in backwards and go forwards.

The midmount sounds cool though.

as for the rb26. The level of mods required should justify a full space frame. If you did this you could just put longer bars in the front and push the struts further foward and the nose further again. Then you would need to make some fiberglass 1/4 pannels and bonnet. That would cool though. A 1000+hp fire breathing godzilla torquing 4 treads tearing up tarmac in a 1200.
