yeh if you run huge wheels you can't go as low. personally i think 13's or 14's look the best. 16's or 17's look out of place and don't go with the older body styles in my opinion but it's your car.

you will need to modify the front of the guards, especially if you have repro panels. You may have issues with the offset of 17" mags on standard struts. Also with rubbing on the footwell.

i have 17s with 205 40 17 rubber on my 1200 wagon. i had to change the front strutts , cut the front of the guard at the bottom so the tyre would pass it when turning and also had to change the shape of the foot well cos the tyre scrapped there too !! i was told when i bought my wheels that they were one of the last sets of rear wheel drive offset rims avalable in austrailia..... so if you are prepared to do a few mods to get the 17s on and can find some rear wheel drive offset rims i think the end result is well worth it !!!!

It's not the diameter of the rim that's a problem, it's the outside diameter of the tyre.
If you want to go with large diameter rims, then you need VERY low profile tyres if you want to run them without problems.

The stock original cross ply tyre was 575mm in diameter & a 185x40x17 tyre is a little larger at almost 580mm
This will give you little or no clearance problems if the wheel offset is right.

I run 205 tyres on the rear & this is probably as wide as you can go & still drive it over curbs etc. without any real problems, so a 205x40x17 will come out at 587mm OD & should fit OK under an unmodified 1200 rear wheel arch.

Now all you need to do is find the right wheels & tyres. Good luck.
There are many of us who think that 15" is probably the largest diameter that is cost effective, reasonably easy to find & asthetically balanced with 13's & 14's being the most popular. [with good reason]
