If you are talking about using a Mazda carb (or any carb) on an A14, one question is: How much boost can a stock A14 engine handle?
10 lbs is what I've heard. If you avoid detonation, it should be safe. To avoid detonation, you will need one or more of the following: * intercooler or aftercooler * water or alcohol injection * very rich air/fuel mixture * timing retard
There is no need to shorten the rods, as the A14 rods are already short. To go with higher boost, they typically fit low-compression pistons. At some higher boost, you need forged pistons and stronger rods, like the TS rods our friends at BPro are selling today on eBay.
In the end, for high boost, it is better to use EFI or blow-through with an intercooler. Then you can get away with higher compression ratio than a draw-through system.
