think i found my problem
Guest_
well the car is booked at the auto elecs tomorrow to confirm and fix this, but the alternator and regulator are probably stuffed.
The results of this are that im replacing points every 1500 to 3000 kms with no regularity as they are suddenly burning out, causing the car to spluter (poor ignition) when only the lights or electrics are working. This results in bad timing causing my car to run like crap, annoying me no end for almost 1 year to fix this problem.
Only reson i worked it out is because the car has suddenly developed a backfire from unburnt fuel in the exhaust manifold (showed up at work). An airplane technician at work (yes i work at the airport) noticed it and came over and talked to me. Thank his blessed heart and pasion for carbies.

Is it the reg, or is the coil running 12V "all of the time" ?

If you've removed the bypass resistor, then instead of the coil getting 12v at start and 9v the rest of the time, you might be passing too much grunt though your poor points. Does your coil get scaldingly hot after a drive?

i havent bypassed anything, this is just one more thing i have tracked down in my two years of ownership. Auto elec said to come around tomorow, he has to change a starter motor on a jackaroo today. For a 60 year old, this in no mean feat.
By the way, they look tiny compared to a datto starter motor too, 3 bolt holding it on as well.

I use to burn points out in one night racing 12 laps allup.Looked at coil rite one ,resister rite one, condenser right one, wire from coil to points rite resistance.NO change night after night.
After a lot of bottles (RUM),afew hours fishing i modefied E15 elect dizy to A14/15.
Works grate big revs no points 4 years later no timming changed all.

okay fixed this morning with the free help of my neighbourhood auto elec across the street.
He measured the drop of amps from the alt to the resistor/coil etc. The 25 amp alt was only pumping out 20 with the lights off and 11 with the lights on. The resistor was burnt out from this causing another voltage drop and the coil was past it.
So replaced the coil and resistor with spares i had in the shed. Better with lights off and on but still loss of amps from alt. Ended up replacing alternator for $100 with a 55amp one. Now its all good.
Plus my demister switch works again. yay

umm, not so ggod news, took it for a longer drive toninght and bang, bang bang, back fires back!
My only reasoning is that i did not adjust the points/timing/spark gaps to the new power coming through the coil. So it was tunned for optimum under a crappy set up, and now the set ups fixed, its set up wrong. any other ideas? Its after changing gears now, so im guessing its too much fuel as the back fire is at different parts along the exhaust. Scary when under the drivers seat area. BANG!

Either your timing is out, or your fuel is wrong..caused by a high float level. This can be the result of excessive fuel pressure, or a sticky needle and seat.

Check your float level..depends on the carby you are running..

Try another carby. and if you run an electrc fuel pump, turn down the pressure with the regulator that you ought to have. Does the break down occur all of the time..at idle..or after high revs..or after heavy accellerating constantly (accel. pump jets)?

its the hitachi and im running half a tank of 98 octane unleaded and half lead replacement. It only happens after heavey throttle.
I replaced the condensor and plugs again today, and checked the fuel float, its exactly on the dot in the window. This things got me buggered.
I might have to upgrade to the 32/36 carb. Or drive to adelaide to pick up that a15.. mmm. Just wish i had $$$ cos insurance was due last week.
