hmmm... well I think $1600 and shipped at the buyer's expense sounds very reasonable actually for second hand gear, but maybe I'm totally wrong.

I'm quite amazed at some of the prices people are trying to get (or are they getting them?) for 1200 parts lately.

To put the Dogleg into some perspective... I have owned old BMWs for many years. I can get a
BMW motorsport dogleg 5 speed box for my 70's 323i (Getrag 245 sport - was fitted to maybe 300
cars total in the Australian market over the whole life cycle the e21 3 series) for around $1000.
Taking into account attrition rates etc, they are a very rare / hard to find and sought after box.
Yes, you can import them from Europe, but this is very expensive, so it hasn't been all that common.

Considering the number of A series gearboxes that must have been imported to Australia via the grey market during the 70s, 80s and 90s, $1600 for a 5 speed, dogleg or not is surely excessive.

Sure, I love my 1200 but some of the parts prices some people are chasing these days border on crazy.

END RANT

haha, I think people just need to accept that the price of living is going up, I would be prepared to pay it if i wanted it (EDIT: or in my case had the money at the moment)... its a case of the right parts for the perfect datto... I spend $1600 on just insurance every year, then there is rego and all that... what are a new set of rims worth now days? and then there is the LSD that is coming... seriously...

Yeah - maybe. You might want to read about the bubble in classic car prices that happened in the UK at the end of the 80's / early 90's. Interesting stuff indeed!

Didn't really happen in OZ during the 80's like in the UK, but is happening now - according to the article, UK collectors have learned from their mistakes in the late 80's. The question is have we learned?

Surely GTHO Falcons selling for $600 - 700k is not realistic. (thankfully 1200s have not gone up anything like that )

For somebody looking for an upgrade from an A12 It is a good buy. Especially for a daily runnabout. I would love a 5 speed but when my car is finally finished (if ever) I pretty much plan to punish it so I might just collect some affordable 4 speeds for punishment duties.

A bubble only occurs when speculators seeking to make a quick profit enter the market, as long as the bidding for a car is between enthusiasts who want the car for itself rather than an investment oppurtunity, there wont be a bubble.

Whether the current muscle car boom is a bubble or a correction, I guess we will have to wait and see.

Or someone that doesn't give a sh!t of what the car is 'worth' as they never intend to sell it, they want that particular part and only use Datsun parts and performance parts...

EDIT:Quote:

the toyota setup will cost around 1700-2000 after all is said and done.

What other option do you have?

The 3T toyota gearbox is a bit stronger though. It came from behind a 18RC engine and some 2 litres before amping it up with the steel case 5 speed. Years ago I had the 2 gearboxes apart side by side and they are almost identicle internally. They have simular sized gears to a R50 skyline stumpy box. I would imagine that the toyota box would handle punishment alot better than the standard A series box.
