#1 nissan dealer="knows nuthing bout datsuns"
B120dat Posted on: 2003/5/26 6:25
i went to the nissan dealer (order desk) today looking for aftermarket bits, and i asked for a A12gx inlet manifold gasket .....he tried to tell me that there was no such thing as a GX motor and that he could only get me a standard gasket for a A12

he also tried to tell me that the GX datsun had no difference in motor... only a few things on the body and interior were different (which is true about interior and body)....
so the end result was no ordered gasket because in his belief that a GX motor doesnt exist

WHY is soo hard to get things done!!

p.s he had some orginal datsun bookelets and brochures i was drooling over i wanted emmm!!

He is kind of right..the A12 GX was never sold in OZ or NZ so the part would never have been listed or carried. Try asking him for an A14 oval port gasket it's the same thing. And Aussie market GXs were just a trim and stripe option.

You may be right that the GX sedan was sold in Aussie, but I've never seen any written info to back this up.Did they get the twin carbs or were they a trim option like the later Sunnies?? Like NZ there are GX carb assemblies and bonnets floating around but I was under the impression they got here by private imports and embassy officials cars.Nissan NZ didn't get the GX so it built the SSS instead.

I was after a gx gasket for a long time and couldn't get one. The a14/15 one bolts on but yhe ports are bigger on the gx and you carn,t cut them out. I had to save my old one and put heaps of silicone on it. Not ideal but it works.

Repco ordered mine, first time perfect, only second time the computer said that it was no longer availible and it had been changed to the other one std gasket (no support for the water jackets down the bottom. Some engine rebuilders know where to order them, theres a engine rebuilder here know keeps a couple in stock cuz of a coz a couple of 1200 drivers here always wanting them
Cheers

Hi Guys a tip from an old parts guy.
chase around until you find a bloke in either a dealership or an aftermarket supplier who knows what you are talking about and the best thing if you are going genuine do your homework and give him the part number- you may know your model better than he does but he knows alot more than you do on all the models!!
cheers Ade

Mate, I had the same problem on Friday. Went to Hobart Nissan dealer. I was after at least four maybe five GX inlet/exhaust manifold gaskets. Why? Well a mate wants a couple and I need a couple for the rally car. So anyway, I was waiting for some bloody service. This bloke says "can I help you?" I reply with "yeah, Im after a inlet/extractor gasket for a Datsun A12 GX motor". This bloke is stunned. I said "the same one came out on a A15 with the oval port head". This bloke still has no idea. "What is the motor in?" "Umm...(thats not relevant but I knew what he meant) a Datsun Sunny" He goes on to say that they never came out with "extractors (as I put it)". Now I work at Super Cheap Auto and the number of people that ask for EXTRACTOR GASKETS for thier Holden 202 is rediculous! Do you think I know what they are talking about? Ofcourse! If your extractors are different to the normal exhaust at the manifold then just modify the gasket. He finally finds it and say he has none in stock and it would cost $36 each to order in.

I just went "yeah right, leave it with me". Why didnt I just order them through my work in the first place? Simply because we dont keep em in stock and I wanted it that day. So now I will order some in through my work which will be a hell of a lot cheaper, hence the name Super Cheap.

It just crapped me how he was such a rude, furken arrogant prick! And working in a very similar job it got me fumeing.

Now sometimes we have to ask what appear to be stupid questions like " What is the motor out of?" Where some people have chucked a 5 litre Chev V8 into their tractor and havent a furken clue! It is only for the sake of trying to look it up in a bloody catalouge to get a part number, stop getting ####ty, because I dont ask the question like your a dick, so dont say "It doesnt matter what its out of, just get me the part!"

There is also a lot we can do for people that obviously no one else bothers to do. I had a bloke that wanted the filter and chrome housing for his Weber, and it had no ID plates on it. So what do I do? Tell him that "nah, sorry cant do it?" No, I pulled of his base plate of the housing (the rest had fallen off onto the road), traced it, faxed it to our supplier and, weh hey, they sent us the right one.

Sorry for having a whinge, but I will never go back to that Nissan dealer because that bloke just shat me off. This was an eye opener, and you wont catch me talking like this dickhead.

That isn't a stupid question. At least that gets them into the ballpark, or whatever sporting arena is relevant in your country. What chaps my ass is when I tell them exactly what I want and they still feel the need to know what car it is going in.
I've sat here for ten minutes trying to think of an example. It'll come to me right after I log off the computer.

I don't mean to sound like smartass but why did you go to a Nissan dealer to get aftermarket parts (aftermarket= non genuine) obviously the parts dude had a bit of knowledge on the GX, did you explain about the difference in the ports ??
If I have a customer who treats me like a prick he gets the same right back.
