generally you don't need a passenger mirror unless it is either a wagon. tray back cab/chassis, panelvan ar have something like venitians restricting rear view acess on a sedan. I will go to work tomorrow and check my adr book to see what year they became mandatory fitment.

If your ute has original paint & it's obvious that there have never been any holes for a mirror, then you can argue that, in your view, it's plain that the vehicle was registered from new without a mirror on the passenger side.
If it was OK, back then, & for every year since then, why would there be a problem now.
If there is evidence that a mirror has been fitted before, then there's a problem, ..... however, the hot rod blokes often use a peep mirror that is clamped to the edge of the door. These are often used on 1933 & '34 models because they were usually rear hinged [suicide] & this is a practical means of providing a mirror.

No reason why it wouldn't work on any other type of door & could be easily removed or re-fitted as needed without the need to drill holes.

As for the heater, what happened to it? As far as I can tell, they all came with a heater/demister in Aussie spec vehicles, so I assume it had one at one time.

yeah thanks for the advice dodgeman. I am pretty sure that no mirror was actually fitted to the car originally.
Ill confirm over the next few days. I spoke to QLD transport today and they told me so long as my car didnt come with one from factory i dont need to have one.
Plus worst case sonario is ill have to put the passenger side mirror on. I have a matching one anyway

Hey greendog, thanks heaps for the offer mate, i am currently getting one sent to me. Ill let you know if anything happens and i need your help :)

Man oh man, I know theres got to be thousands of wonderful things about your country but this system sure isn't one of them.

If cops is the US pulled people over to check tire ratings & size they wouldn't have any time for coffee & donuts! I'm amazed they have the time to pursue this on you guys at all! If they started making the cops here do checks like this the cop would raise holy hell about having to do it.

The State Patrol (police responsible for all interstate highways) check truckers all the time for safety issues(tires, loads, lighting, etc...) but unless the car going down the road is a serious POS spewing dense blue or black smoke with parts dragging & falling off they don't bother you here...... aside from speeding, that they pull you over for!

Good luck battling with the bureaucrats.

it was a crack-down on known "hoon/street racing" spots on the gold coast. if you hang around these places, you will eventually get caught up in this type of thing. They didn't pull people over, they blocked the exits to where theseguys were gathered. You'll almost never get pulled over by police for a vehicle inspection unless you are around one of these known 'hot spots' on a Thur-Sat night in a modified car.

QLD Transport Light Vehicle Modifications Booklet has all the info you need about allowed modifications including wheels & tyres. It is very likely you are over the allowed maximum track increase.

apart from that, your car must comply with all the applicable ADR's in place at the time of its release. It must have an operable means of demisting the windscreen. Depending on the year of your ute, it might need a passenger side mirror.

what other states do, and what 1960's Holdens have is totally irrelevant.

yeah no one is complaining mate or anything i am just asking these questions to better my knowledge and understand what needs to be done so this doesnt happen again.

My last question to everyone is, if i want to keep my 13" wheels and my track has increased by more than 25mm am i able to keep these on my car? Do i need to get a mod certificate or how does this work?

Because i mean i have seen heaps of people with bigger rims and i am sure there track is more than 25mm so how do i go about getting these wheels made legal?

did you see the section in the Light Vehicle Modifications Booklet entitled "What can Approved Persons approve"?

It doesn't mention that it can be approved by an engineer, and I don't know of a mod code for track increase. So in short to be 100% legal, no. But you would have to be very unlucky to get done for it by a cop, unless you keep hanging out at BWCP and The Spit and so on...

mpeyrac Posted on: 2008/4/15 3:09
yeah well that is very true. I know alot of cars out there dont follow this 1 rule 100% and as you say you would have to be very unlucky.

I know it was silly hanging out there and i also agree that i wont be going back there or the spit any time soon as this is just asking to be pulled over and harrased.

Even the transport inspector that pulled me over said, i am not sure but just do some homework to make sure.
So i think in short what i will do is keep the wheels on :P and just keep out of places that i will be asking for trouble eg. BWCP and Spit.

Thanks for all the info

Imported Datsuns arrived in Australia by ship without any external mirrors at all to avoid mirror & body damage during shipping, so it would truthfull to say that your Ute came from the 'factory' without any mirror on the left side. [or the right either]
They seem to have been fitted during pre delivery at dealerships.

Don't know about Qld, but in NSW, new vehicles were not actually presented for inspection at the DMT offices/inspection stations & dealers were required to ensure that the vehicle complied with the relevant requirements before presenting the paperwork for a new registration.

Since this was never actually policed, it's possible, just possible mind you, that an unscrupulous dealer left off a mirror to save a buck. We would need to know what the actual Qld regs were when your ride was new to know for sure.

EDIT
This link will take you to a picture of a 1200 with the type of 'peep' mirror that I mentioned earlier. This car has two of them.
