There were infact 3 different lengths of T50 box from different years, and none of them fit into the existing shifter hole perfectly.

And there are 21 and 23 spline versions too.

They all fit the tunnel without too much pain.

I actually had trouble getting one in Perth. All the wreckers didnt stock em since they were too old.

The rollaclub is a good place to start and get info about which cars they came from. I had a thread with heaps of details not long ago.

2t vs 3t stuff
and a search yields heaps of stuff

It depends on which of the three you get. The very early ones were the shortest, and in a 1k will be miles short, and perhaps unusable since the stick is almost under the dash.

The mid length ones, the stick will fit thru the original hole when in 4th gear. ie its at the very front of the hole, so you need to cut the other half of the hole to make it work.

The last version and the longest is the opposite of the mid sized version. when in 3rd the stick will fit thru the original hole, so you need to cut the other half of the hole further back.

The boxes themselves are indentical, all toytoa did was put extension linkages on the shifter to move the stick further back in different models.

As far as fitting into the 1k tunnel, its like a dream. You will need to completly remove the original mounts and make either new mounts or sandwich plates up to suit.

I am currently in the process of attempting to bribe a fellow datsun owner with a a15/t50 box setup in a 1k coupe to let me borrow the mounts so that I can get them copied and fabricated. When I do, i plan to post the cad templates up so that everyone can use them.
